People that farm it don't usually make anything out of it. They're just praying they can make some money off it.
One of the main things, it can be used in alcohols of differenct sorts, and then there is other things, not as popular.

IRL, animal feed. No further comment.

Would it be a CR breach for him to look up online real-world information on what barley is and what it can do?
I think when you give things real-world names, you have to let people use real-world knowledge of those things. Otherwise, all the people who know that mud is sticky are cheating. Or worse still, that a bike will let you go faster. It doesn't say so in the game.

The game really ought to have internal resource descriptions. Though I can see not wanting to do that...

And even then, how would anyone have ever determined that hematite was iron-bearing? IC, no one knows iron oxides are often red, and I'm sure it wasn't discovered by experiment in the game.

IRL, barley makes a killer soup. It is also used in beer.

I'd have to say you're right. (If it had been discovered IC, I think many characters would have machines that don't even pertain to making iron.) I remember a post in which Sho described the real life process of transforming ore's into other things.

Since this is the Out of character forum, why won't anyone discuss anything out of character? Everything is kept secret from everyone else, just in case someone decides to use it in character. :?

So, in character, no one knows that you need fire to cook pretty much everything, but out of character, no one mentions anything that can be made with anything at all. Instead we talk about if we should have kids in Cantr before domesticated animals. It's all really personally quite frustrating...

The difference is that in most cases, players consider that other players generally know what objects in Cantr do IRL, and are actually asking what those items do in game if they can't easily tell how to make the RL use happen in game.

For example, when someone asks, "How do I eat tomatos?," it's assumed that they're asking how their chars eat tomatos in the game. That is considered to be something the player's char needs to discover.

Babies/kids aren't introduced yet of course, so we can discuss all aspects of them, like what we want them to be able to do, etc. When they are actually introduced, there will likely be alot of "Find out in game" statements. For example, we can suggest how much they should be able to carry, but if someone asks "How much can babies carry?" once they're introduced, nobody's likely to answer.

Giving each and every resource, tool, machine, vehicle, etc a description would be an entire HASSLE. Really :P - Sooo, no.

As for why they use real life names, I feel this is a good thing. Yes, okay, it allows for those that know how to use it (Or if they do research on it, they find out) and then apply that knowledge ingame (Which should NOT be done, I would consider that a breach). But, if given familiar names, people can picture what it looks like and easily RP with it. So if you see "Mud", you can go "Look at this brown gunk!" but if you see "Modularik", one person may see it as "Yellow beads" and another has "Purple cubes" - Ie: Since there's no description, and no one knows what the hell it is, everyone applies their own thoughts to what it is. Eventually, those people with different thoughts will meet, and then they'll have some conflict - Is it yellow? Or purple? Is is shaped into little spheres? Or cubes? - And there situates a problem.

If ever nuclear warheads come into Cantr, I bet someone will make some faction or clan entitled "The Democratic Government of the United States of Cantr" *Cough*

According to what you said, I break CR every time one of my newspawns doesn't have to ask if he can eat carrots.

Also, every time anyone:
Decides to make a bike, knowing it's use without asking.
Finds out which vehicals are the ships without experimenting :P
Builds a loom to make cloth.
Builds an oven to cook.
etc...

Is it a violation of the capitol rule?

If you give it familiar names, you have people doing that all the time, just from their basic knowledge. If you don't want that, use a random alphanumerical sequence.
