I think the main thing holding the game back is that you can't cooperate with people you know prior/real life.
you can't, as a forum, get together to form an empire or kingdom. Lots of mmo's or social games like this have a forum or group of friends decide to all group together in one place and cooperate with each other to build something.
Often this is antagonistic toward other players, which is bad.
I tried to invite real life friends to play this neat game. but then had to clarify we could basically never play together. No social buzz when you have to keep it secret and separate.
I don't have a good answer for how to fix this or if my opinion is valid/worth talking about...but i do know that letting people conspire out of game would necessitate something like 'one character' restriction and would certainly need a better combat system (or simply the removal of stab/drag/drive-sail away) or the incoming wave of imperialistic forum based new players would just destroy the existing towns.
