Potential for large-scale conflict? (Wars, battles, etc.)

I understand that way back when, there used to be massive wars (mostly over land and the like). Does the possibility of something like that happening again even exist anymore?
I know it's been brought up before in other threads that maybe resources should become limited, therefore causing a reason for factions to form and people to go around slaughtering one another again. Personally, I wouldn't especially mind playing a warrior char like that, but most of mine are used to the quiet, easy life they have now, and wouldn't survive the first year.

What do you guys think? Would another series of massive wars add or detract from good roleplaying and the fun of the game? And is there even a possibility for something like that to happen at this point?

In the past there were much more players and characters, so if someone's character died in a war, there were still plenty left alive. Now for example if the Polish suddenly decided to wipe out one of the English islands, I bet they could easily get it done, with the result that a lot of players would rage-quit. There are so many islands that anybody with a ship can easily get what they want just by gathering it themselves. The only location that might be worth taking over because of resources is the one with rubies on the coast, but when you can get several kilos of rubies even by trading, it raises a question of why to bother.

The best conflicts are always those in which very few chars actually die, but instead there are many survivors left to tell the tales for years.
Resource scarcity is not really plausible as a motivator in most regions. But rivalries of more abstract types certainly are.

Yeah, I'm sure the current shortage of players has something to do with this. *sighs* I also think the mechanics of the game make it especially hard to pull off a massive-scale attack without suffering heavy losses/resorting to dirty tricks like dragging.

In the optimal scenario, only people who wanted to die in the first place end up dead, while the ones with a strong will to live will survive. But it's more likely that the most active fighters are the ones to lose their lives, while the sleepers will survive.

Yea sleepy ones would survive unless attackers would attack sleepy ones and then it would be more like massacre than battle. Amount of players limit possibilities not to mention people being awake different times etc..

In order to actually have a war or something, we'd definitely need more wakeful characters. And more players. -_-
You have a point there, but there really isn't any fun in killing sleepers. It's like punching a tree over and over again until it drops stuff. I'm sure that in order for a big conflict to happen, either:
A) More current players would have to be active
or
B) We'd need more players to join the game.
Hmm... maybe something exciting like a war is what Cantr needs to attract more people. *shrugs* Right now, Cantr is essentially in the golden age, where resources are plentiful and wealth is abundant. More fights would add another layer to the game, making it more interesting to play...

I honestly don't like "wars" as are being treated here. I see Cantr more like a RP game, so I enjoy, a lot more, the "cold wars"; intrigues and betrayals, plannings made over the years, see how the characters evolves in that scenario and how the plans change.
I don't like when it only depends about the number of characters; "We are 10 active characters! Let's go to raze an entire town just because we can!"; I find this deeply boring.
A war with its strategy and roleplay, that last years? With its deeply entrenched reasons behind? Maybe; but the "hit and drag" wars? Imho, aren't the appropriate wars for Cantr, because they usually have zero roleplay reasons.

I would love to see something like this.

I'm not suggesting we turn Cantr into Call Of Duty or anything like that. I'm talking about well-role played battles, or maybe wars such as the ones that happened way-back-when. I would absolutely LOVE to see people plan out a large invasion or something, and use tactics other than dragging.

If you're lucky about where your characters spawn, stay in the town, be part of the community, and with enough patience, you will see it.

As I said, with a good roleplayed reasons, I see it great. But I don't use to like them.

The problem there is that quite a few characters don't have that chance. At least 1/3 of mine live in towns where, no matter how hard they try, they can't get others to notice them or others to even wake up. With so many sleepers nowadays, it's hard to be a "part of the community".

It's not so bad. When I started to play it was the opposite. It took me...pfff...one real year to be actually notice, because there were sooo much activity in the town
As I said, too much patience.

XD Yeah... there used to be quite a few more people playing the game. One of my chars used to live (well, still kinda does....long story -_-) in Klojt, and it was pretty much nonstop talking. It was amazing.

Even the most spoken about wars in Cantr history directly lead to decline in game quality as the vacuum left by the characters that died were inadequately filled. The Blackrock/Noniwrok cold war, which existed for years, made Noniwrok a great place to play. When it finally exploded into a hot war, the island never recovered. Karnon became a ghost town, and still is as far as I know. This very well may be realistic - great empires have fallen to ruins in RL...but life on that island is definately not as interesting as it was before the war.
Kudos for Naedell for returning there to inject some tension back into the place even though the tension dissolved after the Guardians were defeated.
