At least during the time the number of players has been recorded, it has never been this low. 729. Previous record was 730.

It's obvious in game too. And sad.
And there are still players around thinking that killing others chars is a good thing to encourage players to stay.

Some of the things holding Cantr back are the very things that make it unique.

NDS was a good step towards conflict resolution that didn't require death, unfortunately many players seem to have the "great now I lost everything, might as well let it die" mentality when their character hits NDS. Of course there are those who play simply to kill/cause trouble, but they are usually obvious and their characters don't live long.

I've been promoting the game but it seems nobody is interested.

To be honest, Cantr wouldn't interest me if I saw it advertised. I don't mind the player drop too much, there is plenty to do if you keep your character list short and truly invest in your characters.

A low player amount seems okay to me, too, but a dwindling player amount has a noticable effect. With all the old characters dying out, most of the towns my characters are in are just sort of depressing for a lot of the time. They bounce back, eventually.
I have tended to have the opposite response than Wiro. If the game seems too slow, I'll make another character. I guess I'm not very good at driving the story of the game myself, so if no one says anything, I won't know what to say. So I could invest as much time as I like into one character, I'd still be sitting there refreshing the page while 'sleeping'. I'm getting better, though.

I assume that one of the reasons why there is a low in log in people is just that some still have vacation. Let the studies begin and some bored students (or proffesors) will flood the Cantr. Prepare for random newspawns attacks, steals, etc. At least that's what is happening right now in polish realms, sadly

New blood is always good, I mean old players quit and if no new ones come how is game going forward?

Something I pushed for in another game I once played that was nothing similar to this but it seemed to help at least for a while would be to have someone write up a very nice email explaining new features to the game say within the past couple of years. Include lots of positive information about the game. Then mail this email to every email address that was ever used to register an account. Remind people of what was so great about the game when they played before and perhaps we would have a return of older players who can help revive the populations. Thoughts?

Don't panic. The number of players has been stable arond 800 for well over 1000 days. It's 730 now; that is not a dramatic drop.
If Cantr, after some 12 years of existence, still attracts almost enough new players to replace the ones quitting, something must (still) be really GOOD about the game. Despite all its flaws.

There's less players, now but far more of them actually play. The difference I find is that when I first started playing is that you had towns with 40 people and 10 were active. Now you have towns of 10 and 5 are active, and those 5 are WAY more active than those 10 ever were. Big difference is that every town used to be occupied. Now many are empty. Not really a big deal, imo.

There are still towns there 10 people lives and only 1-2 are active. Other problem is that some towns have old players as leaders and thats okay.. Unless for some reason that one fells asleep and has all keys and stuff..

There are ways of solving that problem in-game and in-character, so it's not a big deal.

one problem that I don't think is solvable, is that people like to play with their real life friends but they can't here. and I think that scares some people off. Many people get involved in games by their gaming community saying "everyone pile in to this game and lets play!"
I don't think we can revoke that. but you can't socially suggest some one play AND play with them.
