Okay, so numerous players around me have begun RPing without using actions.... I was just wondering if anyone else was frustrated by this? Please comment!

Personally I would like to see an emote system added and I have talked to Jos about this in the past. I usually don't role play actions unless I have no other course because I just don't like seeing them in the talk area. I am hoping that an emote system will eventually be added so that I can role play action.

Firstly a double post when creating the topic. Then the first person to answer is also a double post... The topic of doubles!
I think actions are necessary for some things, and make others more interesting.

I think they need to be RPed, such as someone being sarcastic... that's hard to emote, really.
But hey, that's just my opinion....

I think role playing with actions/typing is benifitial. It allows the person to describe exactly how they feel and seem to others, they way they want it. So neh.

Since we can't hear the tones of voice, or see body language and facial expressions, I think that RPing these things is beneficial and sometimes critical to conveying what a char means and how they mean it.
I've had chars describe some of my chars as "sounding"authoritative or bossy, when in my mind my chars were just casually chatting about things in an informal manner. Gestures and such can go a long way.

Even if we had an emote for emotions, would there be one for evey action imaginable? I like seeing the actions and such, I think it really helps with the game, making it more interactive with other chars

I don't think changing the system could make it better, but everytime I see the word 'think' or 'wonder' or anything like that in the action **, I have to wince. Cantr characters are not telepathic.
Still, I do think the ability to use freeform symbolic actions is good, so long as you distinguish between physical acts that others can see and the inside of the character's mind. A world without *grins*, *smiles*, and the assorted more involved actions would be a bit dry.

But you can tell when a person is thinking, by the expression on thier face, but instead of saying what thier face looks like which can be miss understood, they use *Think* also, I've seen one use *her Brow furrows as she thinks* now that one is good, now if you remove the word think one could think she is angry.

There are certain circumstances where I believe actions are a must. What if two characters are in love? Most romances do not began merely through words... You cannot express emotions that deep without interacting physically or merely smiling to the other person. Also, as someone already posted, sarcasm is heavily used in society. It's impossible to express sarcasm (or a lot of other emotions) without actions. I find that the characters that never use actions tend to become bland and end up becoming the same character as every other character without actions. A person wouldn't be interesting without emotions or physical interaction. Words aren't enough, they are too easily misinterpreted. (sp?)

People role-playing actions in the non-English areas usually annoy me, because they write the actions in English, just like the rest of the event screen is still in English. This is particularly annoying in places where two non-English groups meet and they go like "Wie geht es dir? *like saying 'How are you'*".

That's true, though I always try to write the emote parts in Swedish when playing with Sven, although it requires more use of dictionary. They teach more conversational language in schools, at least in the first courses.
I think it's good roleplaying having the people make little gestures and express feelings, otherwise it wouldn't be roleplay but chat!
Then some people complain when I write for example Gahak's thoughts on the chat box and some people indeed react to them as if being psychics... But if books descrive people's thoughts, then why not also rpg:s?? The things going on a person's head affect the body language. What would you think if someone emoted *He stares at the man's muscles, expressions varying from hunger to mild anger.* FAGGOT! But no, he's just thinking about how great a slave that person would become, and at the same time remembers the laws forbidding slavery. Some things never happen, so why should people's dreams and chances be hidden?

I think you people got me wrong. I was thinking of an emote system where there basic options like smile but also a system where you can freestyle the actions and add a little bit of custom and spice to action.
I do hate when somehow does the think thong though. I agree that Cantr characters aren't naturally telepathic and I usually just ignore comments like that.

I think this is one of those thick grey line areas where no one is wrong and no one is right. Best corse of action use your best judgement for what you post and figure out how your characters would respond to a post like those.
*thinks Jack looks great*
Jack thinks
A. that Jill is coming on to him!
B. what in the heck is Jill looking at?
C. he does think anything cause he never even noticed!
