Interest Poll

Just thought up this question and figured it might be a good measure of the player population's general interest in the game.
Everything means everything - a completely destroyed life. No friends, no lovers, no possessions.

Probably go to bed and cry myself to sleep
After that, I'd RP their misery to give them a reason to be quiet and inactive for a while and spend a few days concentrating on my other characters while I concoct a new plan for that character's life.

No "one size fits all" answer there. I've experienced some major trauma with a few of my chars so my answer would probably follow the same pattern as those situations. I'd probably have to walk away from the game for a short time (but definitely not quit). Spend a few days or a week mourning, raging, or otherwise going through the emotions of loss on that char's behalf. I'm sure the affected char would sleep awhile but it would depend heavily on that particular char's personality whether they would pull through or go the suicide route. In the end, I'd bet more heavily on "life goes on" and the char would either trudge through life as just a shell of their former self or they would go through a period of self-pity/depression but eventually get it together and start over (with some hefty baggage to lug around and annoy others with "woe is me" stories.

).

It depends on how they lost it all. Asuming everybody didn't die, I think my intrest in the character would skyrocket. If everybody was murdered though, I think the interest would likely plummet, depending on the characters personality.

I'm not sure which one of my characters is my favorite. I think I like most of them equally.
If the first one lost everything, he'd feel like he somehow deserved it. He's been in a situation before where he lost majority of what he owned and the person he cared about the most at the time, yet he had one friend left and also a sloop, so it wasn't that bad. He might die of old age but not necessarily, depending on the situation.
The second one once lost everything she owned and the only person she cared about, so it's unlikely that it would happen again but I think she would be a fighter if it happened again.
The third one has only two friends but a lot of wealth. She's quick to make friends but I don't think she could replace the wealth because that took years to build. Of course some of it came from scavenging but that also takes effort. She would find it unfair if she lost everything, but she has a nice personality so I think she could easily bond with new people.
The fourth one already lost most of what mattered and considered suicide, but it was easier to keep on fighting. This was before death from old age was available. If he lost what's left/regained, he'd be like "screw this!" and die of old age. He's already convinced the world is a very unfair place. Most of the time I don't even like playing him, so he's not my favorite.
The fifth one doesn't have much, so if she lost the little there is, she'd also be like "screw this, the world sucks" and promptly die. But she's nowhere near my favorite character.
The sixth one only truly cares about one person, so if she lost her, she would probably lose her will to live. If she lost everything material but still had her, she'd find a way to bounce back.
The seventh one cares about two people and not so much about material things. Sure it's good to have wealth, but if he lost everything except one of the people, he might still bounce back, but if he lost both the people then he'd find some way to die.
The eighth cares about one person a lot and another person a little, and has also gathered a bit of wealth. It would be a disaster if he lost everything, but if that happened, he's still so young he could start over. He'd probably become an explorer/mapmaker if that happened. He still remembers the time when he had nothing, so he doesn't feel like he's entitled to anything, unlike my older characters.
If the ninth one lost everything, I'm not sure if I would be interested in playing her anymore, but she would be devastated for a while and seek the company of people before giving up.
If the eleventh one lost everything, I don't think I'd want to play him anymore because he's so weak he needs a shield and a community to survive all the animal attacks. I don't think he could survive alone and without a shield. He'd be dramatically mauled to death by animals.
If the twelveth one lost everything, she'd be so confused and sad, but that would potentially be sort of awesome to play out. I love the people she's with but I'm sure the resulting drama would be great. I think this is the only situation where losing everything could potentially be a positive thing.
The thirteenth one doesn't have terribly much but she's sort of materialistic, so she'd be devastated if she lost her clothes. One thing no one could take away from her, though, is her skills. I think with those skills, she could easily bounce back. Also, great drama. I think losing things would only make her more determined.
Then the Finnish:
In both cases if they lost everything, they would die of old age.

Hm..
If my favourite character would lose everything.. In case of murder he probably would swear to skies vengeance and start long journey to revenge his friends.. *also have heard being last of something is quite good.. rp..*
In case of everyone and everything disappearing.. He would probably soon start travelling, maybe see te sea and other side, sknce he has pretty good clue where he is, also little thank to polish explorer who gave some world maps.. *again the last of tribe -card also..*
My other not-as-much-favourite.. If he would lose everything and everyone around, mostly his one and only friend. He would kind of be stuck in spanish islands being able to speak mostly most basic spanish, not probably being able to understand even three out of four words being told to him.. He would get a new chapter from it to his becoming-holy-book and he probably would try to seek new places.. maybe english islands this time, or atleast english people, since it's a language he understands quite fluently..

This is an interesting question. I'm a type of player who never purposely kills or stops playing a character; even if they're not very active they'd continue working toward something or for someone. They only die from the intervention of others.
With one of my characters a very similar situation happened. Not exactly, but similar. He held a leadership position of a very populated and active town. Then, the population went down and the town's wealth was robbed while he wasn't there. He ended up leading the town with another character, but after more years passed she decided to leave, so he was left almost by himself. He went to sleep and then woke up again to find the town completely empty, no other person if I remember correctly, and almost no items or resources or food and no keys. Eventually he was able to get back his old vehicle, but although dissapointed he just kept on working and gathering resources. It still isn't much.
If my favorite character lost everything, then I would be very dissapointed, but she would certainly continue living and likely would just start over again with her goals. At one point this basically happened to her where she was forced to leave the town she had worked for and led for decades, but eventually she ended up back in her place.
So I chose other because things would certainly change, but I wouldn't stop playing the character and I'm not sure I could say it would be with less interest in the game.
PS And of course, time and time again my characters have been left to themselves with everyone they knew dying, but just keep on living and you'll meet new people, who also die..it's like a circle of life.

Even I have 15 chars just some of them are really close to me and some are just living. I know few of mine could be deeply depressed for they have already had to bear many things in their lives and one has a different life compared to others . In past I killed some for different reasons and I am no regret for the most. Now I feel like a different cantrian than before so probably I would just give them a rest and hope their life will turn better soon.
I would not quit Cantr in any case, that already happened in past so I am not likely to repeat

Certainly wouldn't quit, although there have been a couple times I felt the need to step away for a bit.
I have a few that are bouncing back from crushing moments, 2 of them losing everything. A do think a couple of them are gonna die off, simply because there is no in game influence to bring them back to positive state, and as such, will whither away. OOCly, it would be easy to give them new goals, as they have accumulated a bit of wealth and have the capacity for new things, but doing so would just ruin the game.
The ones I am playing out, they are recovering in different ways. One is moving on rather well, and another is very devastated and maybe even losing his mind a bit in grief.

I've only once had a character that experienced serious trauma like this. That made the game exponentially more interesting to me. I actually wish that it would happen to more of my characters. Their dull lives need some shaking up once in a while!

I actually experienced this once with my favorite character. Some may know her story. She didn't start out as my favorite character, but I decided to have her get frustrated with her town and leave. Some other folks - mostly younger than her - felt similarly, so they followed her. She and this small group went and established a new town on practically-virgin land and - in a matter of a few years - got a workshop up and going, complete with steel weapons and the whole nine yards. The accomplishments of this city were a lot of fun for me. I had other town leaders, but never one that had to do things without a massive stash of resources. To have to start from scratch was actually kind of fun.
I made a decision to mix things up a bit with her and introduced some drama by developing an interesting personality quirk. It wasn't very well received. Additionally, two of her personality traits she developed over the years - strongheadedness and paranoia - combined to create a toxic cocktail of alienation and ruined pretty much all her existing relationships. She was dragged off onto a water vehicle by her - at that point - ex-boyfriend... one she didn't have a key to. She took that boat and sailed it away with nearly no possessions. Her whole town was upset with her at this point, I'm sure... so she basically lost everything and everyone - the criteria for this poll.
I thought about giving her new purpose by returning her to her original town, tail between her legs, and have her live out her days as a paranoid scaredy-cat.... but I decided that this really didn't fit her character. Revenge... that might have fit her... but she was weak and awkward at fighting... so that really would never work for her. She'd never be more than a minor annoyance. Instead, I had her give away all her possessions except a pickaxe - which she used to commit suicide somewhere alone and unannounced.
Long story short: I voted that I'd stop playing the character. Likely after going out in some dramatic fashion.

I answered one way but my past experiences are indicative of a different answer.
I've had two characters lose everything out of thievery. Both of them fell into something of a depression. One tried to starve herself but was stopped by people in the next town over. So her misery was only prolonged and she did eventually starve herself. The other one became a tyrant and eventually realized that she had reduced the state of her town to one of existence and not of growth and thriving and turned her leadership over to someone else. She had intended to keep the truck however for resource runs, but that was taken from her. She went on one last resource run before she finally starved herself, surrounded by townspeople but utterly alone in the world. It hurt to see her go that way but there was no hope for her.
Three of my characters lost sight of the people that were important to them and passed away from that. One of them was the last known survivor (to my knowledge) of a colony, and as he had no way to get back to his hometown, he decided to join his dead exgirlfriend, the girl he had loved most. The other three had people they were close to around but lost sight of why they were important because they were sleepy as well.
Three of mine died because I was tired of playing them. I simply stopped playing them, really. Shame, because one of them had just paid off a sextant and was supposed to become my new cartographer, or something. She was angry at the world for no apparent reason.
-=-=-=-=-
As it stands now, I... huh. I don't really know. (From now on they will be numbered by order of spawning.)
Three isn't likely to lose everything and everyone, but if she did, she is too strong to let that drag her down forever. I might lose interest for a while but I think I would keep her alive.
Four has kind of already lost everything, she just hasn't realized it yet. I'm not terribly attached to her, but I do intend to repurpose her so a loss of everything wouldn't be too terrible.
Six has lost almost everything at this point - his girlfriend, his platonic best friend, his town leader, his tandem,... I still play him to the best of my ability however, and the characters that he has been supporting as of late had better be grateful! -glare-
Nine is unaware of having anything at all. It's not likely she'll lose it but if she does... well, as long as her companion lives she will live. If her companion dies, I doubt there will be much left to keep her going.
Ten has lived/slept through so much crap it's ridiculous. She pretty much just sleeps and wakes up whenever I feel like waking her up. And that will probably forever be the state of her existence.
Fourteen doesn't have much. But I feel like if she were to lose it, her reaction would manifest itself in a near complete turnaround in her personality. I would try to legitimately roleplay that one out instead of sending her into permasleep.
Fifteen is too young to have (and therefore lose) anything.
-=-=-=-=-
So there's really no way to tell. Fourteen is my favorite this very second and it seems I would put more effort into her if something happened to her than any of the others.

Tough question. I have to say it would depend on the situation in which it happened. If it happened to everyone I'd be more accepting for instance a hack or something that couldn't be fixed and everyone lost everything. If it were just my character I'd be relatively upset but do my best not to let that happen

I don't think something like that happening to a single char would affect how I feel about the -game-.
However, depending on the situation, I'd like that certain char more or less, maybe would even end playing that char if I'd lose interest. I don't think it would affect any other of my chars or my feelings about the total game.
