I haven't played around with pets yet. Can you attack them at all or do you need to put them back into a pack first?

You can only attack them when they're in the pack, and you can only butcher them (by clicking a button on a cleaver in your inventory) when they're not in a pack. And of course you adopt one by first separating it from the pack, and then you can actually use the pet as a weapon to hunt by having the pet in your inventory.

Of course, you can only use certain pets (hawks, eagles, etc) as a weapon.
