2 Cantrs...

General out-of-character discussion among players of Cantr II.

Moderators: Players Department, Public Relations Department

Would you like to see two different Cantr? One medieval game and one with a steady technological progress?

Wow, that would be great!

2 Cantrs would mean twice the addiction. I would only have time for 1 Cantr, and I want it in a medieval setting.

Again with the damn medieval setting? Give up Pirog! This game has never been a medieval game! I want 1 Cantr and it should lead to a modern society.

I don't want to take part in this silly poll. (But you do anyway by filling in this option)

2 Cantrs...

Postby Pirog » Sun May 30, 2004 12:59 pm

This poll is just made out of curiosity.
I realize that economical issues and lack of time might make it impossible...just want to know what people thinks about it :)

I think 2 Cantrs would be good for interesting new people to the game(s).
A lot of people would like a purely medieval game, and many want to play a modern game. Even more would like both :)

When the mysterious Cantr 2.0 will come I think it will be perfect for launching the other Cantr and keeping that to merely medieval inventions.

It sorta already is like that, the new islands when they're introduced are the "low tech" places, while a few major islands enjoy every tech benefit that is possible.

I voted to keep it moving towards modern technology. I think everything should be in place so that cantrian technological progress is not hindered. Don't think of it as not being mideval, think of it as being realistic. Even in mideval times, the opportunities were in place for societies to become more advanced, and they did over time, resulting in the present state of things. In cantr, technological progress has to be programmed in for people to stumble across it. But just as long as it's properly long and difficult to reach the top and things like item deterioration are implemented, the availability for technology is not only acceptable, it's necessary for cantr to properly simulate society.

But you could have a medieval game that slowly progresses technologically, but at a pace that would keep it in a medieval era.

I'm just a little scared of Cantrs growth with the current system.

But I think the point of the game is to see how are Chars develop as a society in whole, if kept in the midevil times it would only hold back the game

I'd like it if it didn't get too technological. I like the smilarities between the game and the middle ages. I've always wanted to live in times like that despite all the things we have today such as cars and computers. I'd gladly give all that up to live in that era

The society could still progress, only slower.
As it is now new techs come very fast, considering how few generations have passed...

As Andrew pointed out many people like the middle ages and find that more interesting than a RPG in more modern environments.

We may have the Tech, but can we make it yet? Tell me of one log cabin in the game?

Andrew pointed out that HE likes the middle ages  But I'm sure there are more. I'm just saying that slowing it down will only hold us back. Now that we have to make iron, and then the steel, even tools are harder to make, I like it the way it is, that's all

There are allready quite a few modern machines and vehicles to make...

just saying that slowing it down will only hold us back.

Well, you might be right...but then again it can be the contrary.
If the programmers don't have to worry about the monumental task of making a game that progresses into a modern society without becoming silly they could spend all their time making cool things like children, weather, a more advanced combat system, a grid system etc.

I think it is very hard to make a complex gameAND have a progressing time line...

Now that we have to make iron, and then the steel, even tools are harder to make, I like it the way it is, that's all

Yeah, and that's why I thought it would be great if we could have 2 Cantrs :) One like it is now and one catering for the ones that thinks Cantr would be even greater in a medieval setting :)

I like the medieval setting but the possiblity to advance beyond that is really nice. If we can refine the creation tree abit to prevent some tech skips. I think we would encounter some really interesting cultural encounters.
Somehow you strayed and lost your way,
and now there'll be no time to play,
no time for joy,
no time for friends
- not even time to make amends.
You are too naïve if you do believe life is innocent laughter and fun.

I think it would be kinda fun to start out in the stone age and go all the way through history.

In order to progress without things getting silly I think the programmers should introduce things as we go for example:

In the beginning:
Stone Age:
Stone, Wood, Fire, Bones, Hide
Rocks as weapons

Then introduce tools:
Tool Age:
Stone Knives, Stone Tools, Bone Tools that sorta thing

Maybe more populated areas would progress faster or maybe someone would have to research the next tech...it could be a project and there could be a tech tree.

It would be a verrrrry loooong project and some would take longer to research than others but then there could be scientists who do research for cities.

For Example:
Research Bone Knife
10 days
Research Wheel
40 days (2 years)

Maybe shorter maybe longer...

Now everyone in the town where it was researched could now use that tech and they could travel to other towns and teach the tech in turn for resources or other techs.

Just imagine how it would evolve, exciting huh?

Now I know this is probably unrealistic programming wise. Because it would probably take years and years but I think it would be a lot of fun.

I got more ideas and variations if anyone wants to discuss
In order to accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan but also believe.

I'd really like a second Cantr...medieval, based on the Cantr we know.
Perhaps some more fantasy....
Perhaps...(this is really heretic) some good old fashioned RPG

with GM etc.
and monsters
