Suicide!
To become a pirate at first. You need a ship. Preferably a fast ship. You can steal it. You can Buy it. You can build it. As long as the people don't get the idea you are going to be a pirate. They'll exterminate you for good.
It was a sunny day at the town when my character which had alcohol problems, problems with town leader and he had just kind of lost his love and he was being humiliated.
In a one second. He decided to become a pirate. He looted the city's kitchen and public storage for valuables, medicines and food.
Then he ran to the docks. Locked them up and took a ship to escape. Escape was successful.
Always, the most critic situation when pirating is the undocking. A pirate ship is most vulnerable by that time.
The escape happened in a matter of seconds.
Then he began sailing to south along the coast and looking for crew. He stopped once in a while at remote locations. He got lucky at one locations. He found two relatively young men, without weapons or surprises they could use to betray me.
So we began looting the coastal cities using the 'Hit and run' - tactic.
There's always the danger they would stay in the town, your crew. Betray you. Telling everything about you. Luckily, that has not happened. Yet to me.
