Eye colours etc.

We could introduce eye/skin/etc. colours in two ways: 1) stay as close as possible to real life; 2) make colours possible that are not possible in real life.
The first has the advantage that Cantr looks less weird, and it might be strange for the imagination if we get really weird values. Especially for those not used to watch science fiction things, it might be really odd and uncomfortable.
THe second has the advantage that we can create a slightly bigger variety, and more importantly, that we have less chance of getting problems by replicating real life problems. E.g. if people are anti-black people, black players might feel personally offended. But if people are anti-blue people,. it becomes less problematic.
So, what are your opinions?
(It's a 7 day poll)

I feel that we should keep real life colours for eyes, skin, and hair - but there should also be some added variety to it. Seeing Green, Purple, Yellow, and Orange people would be quite humours, and I'm sure some societys would base judgement based on colours (All Green people are gullable, all Purple people eat Carrots, etc). Of course, in a sense its racist, and I'm against racism and prejudice, but seeing as how this is a "society simulator", adding some of this would probably give it flavour (As long as no one took it personally). Black, brown, peach, and white still being in the rainbow should still be part of the game, as a familiar touch to realism.

Option 2.
Why? Well, firstly, especially with eye colours, in RL, there are a lot of very odd colours possible but rare. Purple for instance. You can get purple eyes, but its very rare, if I remember right...
Skin colours are less varied in RL, but I think some of us would enjoy having odd coloured characters.
Especially hair!
Maybe hair colour should be modifiable by dying it.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing some eye and hair colour variations... having green and blue people running around would, IMO, be too much... so I would basically have 'normal' skin and major attributes reflect real life, but minor things could be more varied... not hugely, i.e. having black/white eyes, etc, but you get the idea...

Yes, Purple eyes are possible, as well as Yellow. Both extremely rare, the latter even more-so.

I went for alternative 2, but I read it as very small deviations from IRL "colors"...if that wasn't a correct interpretation I go for alternative 1.
I would also like it if people could contact one of the departments if they would like a look that is unique or differes much from the norms...

I agree with this all the way. Even though this is a simulator it still is a game. A lot of people play Cantr II with their imagination. So, let them have all the colors of the palette to work with. Not everything in Cantr II has to match the real world. Nor should it.

I completely agree with this, in addition with my previous post.

I am still of the hope that in addition to the gene-set brief descriptions, characters will have an additional description available they can write to consolidate the basic gene description and add in any additional details about the character. I also voted 2 because I can see the possibility of RL feelings interfereing with the game but I don't want too drastic of changes.

I'm definately with you there...creep
It would probably demand another department, but I don't think it would take up to much time...

Oh great, so chances are that in Cantr 2.0 I run into a smurf.
Anyway, I find it ridiculous that some ppls/chars thoughts on others would be influenced by the ay they look upon coloured ppl IRL. I mean, yeah, I'm a racist, but I also know to seperate RL from a game as Cantr. Besides, I also know that that black/yellow/white/red (or whatever colour we think exists in the real world) char could be played by a human player with any skincolour, shape and size.
This reminds me of the ever returning discussion here in the Netherlands in the "Sinterklaas " Period. As a tradition, this "klaas" guy delivers the presents to the children, aided by his black sidekick. (A moore). For the past 20ish years we've seen these 2 figures in all colours of the rainbow, just to make sure the people won't think that white ppl are the dominant race and blacks always their subjects...
Oh well...

Anthony,
everybody knows it's those Orange people who all eat carrots, the Purple people all eat grapes.
There is sure to be bigotry, just as there is stealing and killing for no good reason. The dark side of people comes out easily when at a computer keyboard, rather than face to face.
I know it would take up way too much computer space, but it would be nice if we could design our character and have a pop up showing what that character looked like to everyone. I've got first dibs on the Jessica Rabbit body.

The thing is, is your character racist or not not you as a player.
Note there was quite some prejudice between Ladvicians and Naronians for many years that would be considered quite racists.
Jos, I think if you put on the site a little blurb about any racist action or slurrs in game that have to do ICingly is all right but racist nature of OOC should be a capital rule breach. I think the line between the two is pretty clear.

I like the idea of eye, skin, and hair colors it would be most fun. I'd like to keep it close to RL, but not exactly as it is a fact that someone will start an Anit-*Color* group in the game, and like Jos said, it can be a very sensative subject to some people. It is because of that I'd like to see some blue, orange skins.
Another thing that should be thought of is, not everyone who plays this game is over 18 or 21. Just imagine a young man sitting at the dinner table with his parents (do they even still do that these days

) and telling his parents about the game, saying that his char was slaughtered by and anti-black group. No matter what color he and his parents are, you can almost be sure that that account would be canceled pretty fast, plus the letters from parents would sure keep Jos busy too.
So lets stick with blue orange, pink, red, violet, green and such
