Trading/Piracy/Thievery
I haven't seen a thread so far about these subjects and how your characters did this, so I decided to open one.
Have you ever roleplayed a character that tried to become rich by trading, being a pirate or being a thief? And how succesful was your character and how did his advanture end? (animals, got caught, etc)

I had several characters become rich by trading. You just need to take people things they really want and are willing to pay a premium for.

I think that's a difficult question to answer, Estaar. I've had traders go out with things you would think are an easy sell and no one wants it. Then had some traders come across people who would pay for potatoes. It's very hit and miss. Plus, every place has its own needs that can be very different from their neighbors.
I'd say traders make more profit by salvaging while they travel. Yes, it's definitely possible to come out ahead in trading... I've often found that even though you are the one spending time traveling (and often gathering things yourself because no one wants to trade) towns still expect to pay equal rates on things. No compensation for all for the time and effort of taking things to them. You can show up with a resource that isn't even available on their island and they still want to give you the manual gathered rate on their goods.

The key to overcoming this is a strong personality and the willingness to refuse a trade. Most of the time, people quote equal rates because they don't want to think or do math, not out of any true conviction. You also need to be willing to accept anything as payment. If you're picky, your trading opportunities are limited.

I had a very very successful pirate and slaver that became fairly rich from it. She lived to 108 ? I think before she was finally killed by the Polish. By far one of the most interesting and fun characters I've played.

I have a couple of chars who want to be rich and both have almost nothing (one now less than nothing) and they had a rough live, they've not been treat nice (and one of them is trying it in a "legal" way and being nice!)
Then, I have some chars who want nothing... And a couple of them are quite or very rich (one even more than she knows) because they inherited lots of things.

Yep, some of my chars have walked away from trades and been called greedy for it. lol Some of them aren't so confident and just take the trade.

Most of my traders have claimed all the stuff they've found abandoned or left behind by dead people. That gives a nice nest egg for trading.
I have just one pirate and now he's tempted to live like an upright citizen because so many people have been nice to him. He could probably buy everything he needs, so why risk stealing when you could get anything through honest trading? Although killing sleepers is a bit different. Not much risk involved there.

I've never had any pirate or thief myself, but one of my characters was part of a crew of four people in a Longboat. They didn't really trade or something, just traveling.
When they were back into their city, one of the crewmembers stole the boat and we were left behind.
