Relationships

Postby toon » Wed Feb 29, 2012 2:58 am

I find it sad, I've noticed that on just about every character I've had, I've seen newspawns, usually women, latch onto the first person that seems even remotely interesting. And as soon as one guy dies, or doesn't work out in general, they almost immediately find a new person to be in a relationship with. It seems a little sad to see how unattached these relationships are. Am I the only one seeing this happen?

Nope.
I'm not sure if that's more widespread among female characters or if it's just that there's more women than men chars in general.

Funny, I've seen it just as often with male chars and not just newspawns. Once was even during the burial of the guy's beloved and he started getting close with a girl who was consoling him. Cantr love is fickle and mourning is brief.

Edit: I should correct that - I've seen it more than once where a char who was burying loved ones hooked up with the char consoling them. I was just telling someone the other day that funerals seem to be the best time/chance to start new relationships in Cantr.

Maybe mainly lonely people play Cantr...

I think it also depends on chemistry. If it's there, it's there even if sometimes the timing sucks, but it mimics real life that way.

Also, the game years go by faster than RL years, and the mortality rate is high. It's easier in Cantr to drop those memories into a good corner of your character's mind and go on with your character's lives as well, no matter how heart wrenching it might have been to lose a character's lover. I'm sure many just become inured to the constant ebb and flow of relationships.

I do think it tends to mimic real life to some degree. There are lots of people in this world that cannot go a day without being in a relationship. There are others that will spend years alone before venturing into another relationship, if they ever do.

If you go into mourning for too long, the chance is the character consoling you will get bored and move on / die, so it's better to seize the moment when it presents itself. I have some characters who haven't had a relationship in ig years, even decades.

I have had chars with mates that have lasted RL years. Pea with Pratt, Mojo and Payne Nocenti, Queen Gilda Lalla with Chris, and the Vel'Noran's Viola and Tuckah Surrat. All lasted until the day they died. My three girls that lost mates never took another.

I haven't had many characters in relationships, but I think most of the ones that have been, were in long-term ones that lasted until death, and if they were the survivor, never had another relationship. One or two characters had bad relationships, and I did have one girl that was predisposed to having a lot of flings, rather than actual relationships, but things happened, and she never really saw her full potential in that vein. Oh, one did move on from a past relationship, but it took them a long time to do so... at least 10-15 Cantr years.

Thinking about it now, I think I have more characters in relationships at the same time right now than I have ever had at any given time in the past 7 or 8 years of playing. :? Or maybe it seems like more because I have fewer characters overall.

I think it is mostly because they have already waited for years for the sleeper to either wake or die.. so the attachment has already dissolved. I do notice alot of the newspawns latch to whomever pays them attention, maybe because they RP, so it is like ..ohh this one is awake and lively, best I keep this one! Then they drop off to sleep anyways..

Yes, I can see that in the case of sleeping deaths. They still care, but the strength of that caring gets worn thin by the end.

Yes, I agree Sunni. Most of the time, the death of a partner is a relief after years of non-responsiveness. Characters have wanted to move on, but are prevented by their love and loyalty. And as for newspawns latching themselves onto the first active character they find - I don't blame them. If they're new to Cantr, they want to play. If they're veterans, they know how rare hyper-active characters are.

My characters all fell in love the old-fashioned way. No quick attachments here. I've also only had one lose a partner, and he's not looking to reconnect.

I can't say that any of mine have been in a quick romance.. save for 1. (and that really wasn't romance to start, she flirted hard n heavy, though it is far beyond that now after all these years)

The furthest that most of my characters' relationships have ever gone were feeling a stronger pull to one person than the rest. Most.

And now I feel compelled to tell my characters' life stories involving their romances (or lack thereof, for some), in as much detail as the Capital Rule and decency allow.

  • Two of my females "A" and "B" were in devoted relationships until their mates "C" and "D" died. A was to get married to C, but the three-month downtime caused by the hacker caused C's character to lose interest, and C never woke up again, and A was forced to kill him. B had pretty much just skipped the "ring" stage and was mostly in a physical relationship with D. It was kind of a relief for her when he died because she realized what she was doing, and she hasn't had a mate since partly because she's afraid she'd do it again. No, I will not tell you what she did; if you haven't figured it out by now, then good for you. Anyway, A also hasn't had another mate since C, although she has had crushes. But I don't think she'll ever have another mate.
  • My male character E was in a semi-relationship with F for awhile, but RL became stressful so E became sleepy, causing F to look elsewhere. When I could log on significantly again, E realized he'd lost F because of his sleepiness, and they officially drifted apart. He still loves her, and he wanted to advance the relationship, but he was just too sleepy, and he was also too afraid. He's never really been all that great with women anyway.
  • My other male character G is in a girlfriend-boyfriend relationship with H, and they're living happily ever after. Lack of gold/silver/other precious metals is the only real thing that's keeping him from advancing his relationship with her.
  • Female character I was attracted to dead male character J, and J knew it and was ready to advance the relationship if she'd wanted, but then J was killed for doing stupid stuff, and so she moved on to...uh, nothing, I guess.
  • Female character K has had multiple crushes. One probably would have indulged her if she had been more open about it. One died of starvation on a trip because they were working in separate rooms and she had no idea he was hungry. And the rest she's ever had have never had eyes for her.
  • Female character L could probably have a mate if she wanted one, but she doesn't really want one. And same with other female character M.
  • Female N will never have a chance because all of the men in the location who that I play her, and they have other women anyway. ><
  • Female O is surrounded by women, and she's straight...
  • The other five....just, no.
