Macros, Scripts, Bots, Automation of Cantr

Postby joo » Thu Aug 11, 2011 11:36 pm

I have gotten the vague impression that such activities are generally frowned upon by the administration of Cantr, and heard from a secondary source that it was even explicitly stated in the in-game messaging system that macros are not allowed... however, information about this was hard to find elsewhere.

What exactly is the opinion of the game administration on automation of Cantr? Is it illegal?

If so, this issue comes to mind, which I do not believe has ever been properly addressed. The other rule that I can think of right now, apart from the this and the Capital Rule, which might not be properly documented in a prominent, publically accessible place in the game, is the rule regarding rape RP.

I have yet to find a game where it's acceptable to use bots or scripts, so, I say no, it's not appropriate, and seems to not be appropriate across the entire online gaming spectrum.

I guess it depends on whether you are trying to get an advantage over other players or whether you are just trying to get around a tedious task. I think it would be okay to use a script to drag every single note in a location in order to clean the place up, but not in order to steal them.

It would be good if we tried to implement ways to avoid the tedious parts so that there would be no need for external scripts. What comes to mind is ability to drop or hand over several objects at a time (by the way, it doesn't even work for notes anymore), ability to move large amounts of resources or items between two locations that aren't necessarily directly next to each other, ability to read notes without taking them out of an envelope and queuing projects for a day so that characters could use their time productively even if the player couldn't log in in the middle of the night.

People have been abusing a dragging bug in the fast because they don't want to go through the trouble of splitting piles and moving back and forth between the storage and a ship in a harbor. And people try to switch direction of a ship back and forth right before the sailing tick just because it's possible.

Without bots drag&kill would be harder :(
If you want to fight, you have to arm yourself in every way possible.
If the victims want to survive they have to have bots too.

Well, if it were discovered that bots were being used for violence, the player involved would be banned for quite a long time, if not forever (at least, I would push for that very strongly). I want that to be perfectly clear.

The system needs to be changed so that using bots in combat will be impossible. It's no argument that the victims can also use bots. The game wasn't meant to be played that way and most people don't know how to find these bots.

+1

As Chair of the PD I would also like to make clear that I too will be pushing for a permanent ban on anyone using any type of automation for violence.
