How do I make a map of my town?

I wanted to make a simple road map and a building map for my town. Does anyone know any simple and free software that would allow me to do this?

Gimp? If you want something simpler, but still not paint, then maybe paint.net

I love it when people make the effort to visualize the towns in some way (though some grouch heads can get mad about it lol). I think I still have a few simple sketches I drew of Jakara Hills when my character Flint settled there and built up his hermit hut. I never got around to scanning them into the game unfortunately. You could even see the tip of Jakara's Tower in the background.
