Wiki-editing (Guidelines, help, etc)

This thread will be dedicated to discussing wiki editing. From now on players of Cantr can't always be sure that staff make updates to the wiki. The wiki is meant to be for players, by players, with input from staff where requested.

The goal is for every item in game to have a corresponding article in the wiki, using the same syntax and looks for conformity. The current recommended article layout is something like the following. I'm using silver fork, http://wiki.cantr.net/index.php/Silver%20fork, as an example, and everything after a # is a comment, only for this example.

Code: Select all

{{InterwikiLink:SilverFork}} #1
{{ST|stack={{Infobox:Manufacture #2 #3
| type      = Semi-finished products
| skill     =
| resources = 30 [[gram]]s of [[silver]]
| tools     = {{hammer}}
| rot       =
| userot    =
| repair    =
}} #4
{{Infobox:Holdable #5
| attack      =
| skillweight =
| weight      = 30
| visible     = yes
}}}}#6

The [[silver fork]] is has no real use in game, except for being used in roleplay. #7

#8

#1 : The first thing in the article is the Interwiki template reference. In this case the line {{InterwikiLink:SilverFork}} will include http://wiki.cantr.net/index.php/Templat ... SilverFork into the article as it is viewed. (NOTE: The names for Interwiki-templates are without whitespace and every word capitalized). The template file looks like this:

Code: Select all

{{Interwiki  #A
| en  = Silver fork #B
| sv  = Silvergaffel #C
}}

#A includes the master template Interwiki, with all formatting and definitions of what the template should do. More about that in some later post. #B is the English article; Silver fork has to exactly match the article name. #C following the English original article are language code and article name for any (all!?) translated articles.

#2 : ST stands for Stacked Templates. Having this is very helpful when (as in this case) an article have multiple info-boxes. It will make them line up to the left of the article text.

#3 : Infobox:Manufacture is a template that is specialized for handling items that are manufactured in game. More about all possible parameters in a later post. I guess most of the ones in this example is rather self explanatory. Leaving a parameter without a value is ok, if you don't know it's value. It will cause the article to be included in the Incomplete category, where someone is likely to pick it up and fix it.

#4 : This is the end of the Infobox:Manufacture template. All templates begin with {{ and end with }}.

#5 : The Infobox:Holdable template is used for anything that can be carried by a character.

#6 : This is the end tags for both Infobox:Holdable and ST.

#7 : This is the main text of the article. As much as possible, any noun or category-reference and such should be linked with [[whatever]].

#8 : Usually in a wiki here goes various Category statements, to include this article in various categories. This is not needed now (in most cases), because our templates handle that for us.

The silver fork example above can be used as a reference for any article on a manufactured object. I will post examples for other types of articles soon.

Now I hope to see a whole lot of new faces on the wiki, making it a complete gaming guide to Cantr.

By the way, I and others, who are more experienced with editing the wiki will monitor all changes, so don't be afraid to try and maybe fail. If you do we will help you fix it and teach how to do it right the next time. :)

Please also remember that the wiki is OOC, so don't speak about it in character. And also don't post information about characters or locations or history of things that have happened in the game on the wiki. That information must be learned in game, or (again OOC'ly) in the webzine.

ยค How to create an article in another language.

I'll show how to create the article in Swedish, describing the Silver fork (from previous post).

1. In the address bar in my browser I type in "Silvergaffel" After the wiki address. It should look like this: http://wiki.cantr.net/index.php/Silvergaffel. The word used must be the same as the ingame translation.

2. You will get a message saying the article doesn't exist. Choose to edit the article.

3. The first line should be the same as the original article above: {{InterwikiLink:SilverFork}}

4. Find out what the info-box template is called in your language. It could easily be copied from an article that was completed earlier. Currently not many languages have the new info-boxes translated. I'm planning to make a list of the available ones somewhere. For reference it can be useful to keep the original English article open in a tab, to see the values while editing the new article. Translate the original article text into your new article. Save.

4. Then go to the InterwikiLink template (http://wiki.cantr.net/index.php/Templat ... SilverFork) and edit it.

5. Add the article with the language code of your language (it has to be an official Cantr language, that has an ingame translation):

Code: Select all

{{Interwiki
| en  = Silver fork
| sv  = Silvergaffel #1
}}

#1 is the line I added.

Just one question. Can these guidelines also be found on the wiki? Not everybody seems to visit the forums regularly.

Not really, but since all the template documentation is on the wiki, I'll add these texts there too somewhere.

I feel somewhat responisble for this topic ;) Am I right, EchoMan?

I messed up some articles in wiki last weekend and it took me some time to restore them to the original state. Now I pay much more attention to what I do.

Anyway thanks for guide, it will be helpful next time :)

No, not at all. It's just that there is an increase in staff activity, and that means a lot of changes, and that we don't have time to update everything ourselves. :)

Sorry about that. :wink: I'm working off a couple of old semi-finished projects at the moment.

Good to hear that... Anyway, I will try to translate as much as possible. Whom can I contact with any concerns about it?

I installed mediawiki on my laptop to study how a wiki... and testing extensions, I thought that this might be interesting for the InfoBox: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Multilang

I rather choose what language I want to view an article in, than have my browser deside it for me. I'm also somewhat reluctant to install beta software that have known flaws on a production environment. It could be well worth to have alook at this and see future development, but meanwhile I think the system we use today is working. We just need to implement the new Infoboxes in several languages.

Next example is a resource; http://wiki.cantr.net/index.php/Boiled_eggs. Only the template is shown here.

Code: Select all

{{InterwikiLink:BoiledEggs}}
{{ST|stack={{Infobox:Resource
| heals     = 7.7
| heals2    = 13
| skill2    = Cooking
| machinery = [[small fire pit]], [[fire place]] or [[deck grill]]
| tools     = {{small pot}}<br /> or {{pot}}<br />or {{big pot}}
| resources = [[eggs]] with [[dried dung]]/[[wood]]
| method0   = [[small fire pit]] ([[dried dung]]/[[wood]])
| amount0   = 20/40/90*
| method1   = [[fire place]] ([[wood]])
| amount1   = 10/20/45*
| method2   = [[deck grill]] ([[dried dung]]/[[wood]])
| amount2   = 20/40/90*
}}}}

If someone wants to make these pretty Infoboxes for other languages (they exist in English and Spanish, and some of them in Swedish at the moment) I can walk you through the process.

I've started on an article on the wiki explaining the use of the new Infoboxes, and how to translate them.
