Cantr 2.0 !?!?!?!?!?!?

Postby jeslange » Sat Aug 02, 2003 3:34 am

The one thing about Cantr 2 that disappoints me is that I wasn't there when it began. Every time I hear about Cantr 2.0, I get all excited, 'cause I'm gonna be a part of it from day one damnit! Sorry, got excited there. Give me the goods! When'll it be ready approximately? What's it gonna be like? Who, what when where why and how?

Well, this is being postponed again and again and seems further away now than it ever did ;) ... Cantr II 1.0 is going quite well now, and the server is faster again thanks to some really good job by Thomas and Cosmo, and we're all too busy running the game, programming for it, and having real lives next to it, so that development of 2.0 is basicly at a stand-still.

You really should ask Thomas about that ;) ...

PHP would be for 1.0, though - the whole idea behind rewriting the game is to switch language to Java ... but as I said, it's postponed for a long time. There is a lot that is more urgent on 1.0 and personally I will be much, much busier next academic year (going to do two instead of one study), so won't really get to it, I think.

What's the thinking behind switching the game to Java? What are you reasons for doing it? What are going to be the effects?

Same game, less bandwidth. And hopefully no more 'Back' button? It seems it causes most of the problems.

No back!?

Postby Alcatraz » Wed Aug 06, 2003 4:31 am

*Sob*

That's my favorite function! With my internet speed, I don't know if I could handle the time it would take to check without that button...
(You mean, I'm gonna have to use that green back button you put on most pages!?)
*Sobs some more*

*Seriously*

What, exactly, kinds of problems are stemming from excessive back button use?

On a completely different note...

Do you think learning Java as an independant study course sounds plausable?

sure, go buy one of the many teach yourself books form the web, I particularly like the "Sams, teach yourself ... in 21 days" series. I have 4 books from that series, and I'm pleased with each of them (it's just that sometimes I can't get my head round the concepts ;) (Damn pointers in C :? )).

About the speed of your modem and the back button: if we indeed go to a Java game environment, you would have to download much less, and the main reason would be that the client on your computer can remember more, so it doesn't have to download the events list everytime you look at it, for example. So you wouldn't need the back button anymore to save on download time.

would it be browser based? One of the criteria I had when looking for online games to play when I found Cantr was it had to be browser based so I didn't need to download anything. I don't know how many other people do that. Might it affect the intake of new players as some players may discard cantr as it requires a download?

The idea would be to have a Java applet on a website. So, yes, browser based, but it would require Java to be properly installed, and the first time it would be a slightly bigger download (but the second time it should be on the cache).

what chache is it on? I regualrly clear my cookies, history, and temporary files. Would it be under downloaded programs?

Also, I don't know if my Java works right. I have had some trouble with links for things like java pop ups on some web sites.

If you remove your temporary files, you would have to redownload the program. Which shouldn't be too big anyway, but yes ...

About Java ... there is a place where you could test ... let me look ... If this one works, you'd be fine:
