I posted about Cantr on my Tumblr (I've been in quite a few roleplays with friends I have on Tumblr) and I heard back from about six people that they were interested or had already joined Cantr.

Designed & drawn by my daughter in about half an hour last night, went up in a few places this am. If it will be effective or not, I don't know, but we had fun (although she didn't get to draw the sailor and a few others that she wanted in, as it had got really late).

I keep making references to Cantr on the forum community following my rediscovered TV fandom. And finally someone took interest in it last night! I gave her the URL even though she said she normally doesn't ever stick with RPGs very long, and basically her response was like, "This doesn't look like just a roleplay game. This like an EPICLY AWESOME ROLEPLAY GAME. It looks soooooo addicting." But she still probably won't join. But at least I've planted it into the back of her mind now.

This is the first hand drawn poster I've seen. It's awesome, and if nobody joins after seeing it, they're just stupid-heads. 8)
Send a few copies to me, and I'll see to it that they get pinned up in all the local youth clubs, colleges, schools and shops. Someone is a miniature artist in the making. Maybe we could have some more posters one day, with a trader and a hunter, and that long lost sailor! :D

I was thinking, updating Cantr's pages on those pbbg, rpg, morpg sites we have listed could be a good idea, maybe write a review, small stuff that could be done, but some of the pages needs verification from site owner(place some comment line on the frontpage's html) to take hold of the ownership of a page. Some had space to place recent updates on and other ways of indicating that we are indeed alive.

edit: when I checked for pbbg on alexa, http://www.top-pbbg.com/ got the best rank by far, so my suggestion is start there, if some got time.
edit2: Aand unless I'm totally reading this wrong, some half of the pages got worse rank than Cantr itself... :?

I am NOT spawning three new characters just to bump up the numbers, by the way.

One suggestion that I have for attracting and keeping new players:

Make registering and activation easier and quicker. Often trying a new game is a somewhat impulsive decision, with a small window of opportunity. I have noticed that the time between registering for the game and actual activation to play the game can be a stretch of time and sometimes the window of opportunity is then gone and the prospective player is off playing some other game that provided immediate activation upon registration.

I've referred a couple of people to the game and both have experienced some confusion or issues with the registration/activation process. It's true that this game isn't for everyone, however we want people to actually play the game before giving up on it.

Just my two cents.

I agree. It is possible [were some ideas] to make activation process automatic with only special cases to be reviewed manually, but they were rejected. :(

I have been playing with the thought of newbie towns without roads. Staff would have a character there, and new players first char would spawn there, and be locked there until approved, while learning the ropes of the game. You would only be able to spawn one character until approved. There would be an entrance to "something" to enter the game for real, but it would only work after approval. When entering the char would spawn somewhere along the lines of normal spawning.

If we had something like this, there would be enough time to review applications, and the player would get a feel for the game meanwhile.

That's an interesting idea, Echo. It might definitely help because the new player could focus on the basics of character development (the description and name, skills etc), learn the game interface, and have some interaction while waiting for full activation.
Even better, it would be nice for a staff member or two to have a character in there to help guide this initial intro a bit.

Just a thought

Good Idea!

Maybe you could make it appear as they walk into town from a road (or "out of the field/forest or something like that) so it is clear not only the player, but the char too, has some "experience" in life?
