If you were suddenly put in charge of a town with just a few colonists, what would you choose as your government type, i.e. dictatorship or republic? Also, what would you do first?

What kind of people are your fellow townies? Are they active, do they show initiative or need to be steered? Do they have a goal in life? For themselves, for the town? What do they expect from you? How do you see the future of the town yourself?
Are there any neighboring towns? Visitors? If so, are they cooperative, neutral, a possible threat? What kind of resources are available? What is the current tech level?
Asking those questions is what i would do first.
By the way, there are other government types. Company style, commune style, law&rules style, freestyle...

Mmm, I can't agree more. Imagine, however, that there is NO ONE in the town. You have gone to gather colonists, call them "Faceless People". YOu take them back to your place, which has only one building. All around you are non-threatening towns, and there is a hefty supply of food, hematite, grass, and other essentials for a starting town. There is only a basic tech level, but it could rise very quickly with trade of the useful resources you have. NOW what do you think?

I am actually implementing a government inside of a town that was uninhabited. It's a republic, with separate branches of government for checks and balances.

In this situation I would make a free form 'government' where everyone governs themselves. I would watch and make sure nothing obvious happed like theft and assult but the rest would be left up to the citizens.
I would be more like a rangler making sure everyone got where they needed to go and the things they wan'ted or needed.
Then when everyone was situated I would simply move on like I wasn't even there.

Wow. I prefer more of a Republic style of government, with the people electing a parliament of 7, then having the parliament vote one of their number in as Consul, who would thusly lead the town into a more glorious age. Too stupid?

If you have enough people, this can be really fun. It's not stupid, not at all, you just need a lots of awaken people and rping

Also, you can make it fun during the sleepy periods if you have a large, wakey
army. You can drag everyone inside and enslave them with your army and establish a military dictatorship.

No matter how evil or corrupt you are, as long as what you do is for the good of the people, it's okay! Something like that, right?
