The intent of this thread is for the players to enlighten the Marketing Department about the "hook" that made you try Cantr. Please include the following information, if you don't mind, as it makes the information more useful:

-Employed full time

-played pen and dice RPG as a kid, played other browser-based, slow paced text games.

What got you to try Cantr: Randomly found it on like a top 200pbbg site. Then I saw the opening page about how I could be anything I wan'ted to be and how hardcore rp cantr was going to be. Sounded like fun, so I signed 'er up!

I returned because of how awsome the world of Cantr II was. The chars where so diffrent from anything from any other game I had ever played. It was brillient. Couldn't wait to sign up again.

Your age when you first joined: 19 or 20

Your occupational status when you first joined: Unemployed

Game Background prior to Cantr II: Fabel, The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind, KOTOR, a couple of RPG's on my Gamecube and SNES. Mario Brothers etc. Halo2 and a few other FPS's. Just your average 18-35yr male demo stuff. Played a little D&D, not my thing. How do you play a game once a week? Lame!

If your looking for a way to draw in new players you should really push how the world is. Thats is one of the reasons I play, the ever changing and ever growing game world! Sorry if I got off topic.

What got you to try Cantr?
-I was bored. Just quit WoW as lvl 66 priest...yeah I was there for a long time. I'm not excited by PvP so when my PvE guild dissolved I lost interest. Was looking for something with human interaction...and free. :D Found it on a search for free games. I like interacting with other people, I just don't want to feel like I have to keep up with the Jones's to have an impact in the game.

Your age when you first joined?
-35

Your occupational status when you first joined (student, employed, unemployed, etc.) Working.

Game background prior to playing Cantr?
-Varied and long. Wow was my first MMO. I tend to steer away from PvP stuff because it always turns into a grief fest . Tried another called Underlight. Liked the set up but members were cliquey and didn't make it easy on new people. Played/Learned Basic (!!!) on Commodore 64 so I've seen it all.

What got you to try Cantr?
My husband got me to try Cantr along with the spamming that occurred inside of Yahoo!'s Roleplaying Games Room where someone was advertizing CantrII in a small paragraph with a link to the site. (I was growing increasingly frustrated with the CHARP community there for many reasons, all reasons that Cantr didn't possess. Number 1 reason= there were no rules/boundries for which way a person could RP. I hated that people would act retarded about the fight systems in RP there and in Cantr I no longer had to worry about it since the fighting was already in the mechanics but I could still RP with the mechanics if I wanted. And there was also little to no OOC conversation in Cantr which in the Charps
I always found far too disruptive to the atmosphere. It was like stumbling into heaven to find Cantr. I probably wouldn't have played though if my husband hadn't been around to explain what to do.)

Your age when you first joined?
19-20

Your occupational status when you first joined
A homemaker.

Game background prior to playing Cantr?

What got you to try Cantr

I found it on mpogd.com, whilst looking for muds.

Your age when you first joined

Around 14.

Your occupational status when you first joined (student, employed, unemployed, etc.)

Student.

Game background prior to playing Cantr

RP Muds, general video games. I had a cruddy computer, so when it came to my computer I stuck with browser based games. Love for openness in games like Elder Scrolls, or even Deus Ex probably related to me liking cantr's concept so much.

What got me to try Cantr?
I think I found it on a free online games listing. I was looking for an RPG, something which would run in a browser with no plugins, and that required a but of intelligence and creativity to play. Naturally, I was hooked from the beginning despite having lost accounts... 3 times due to inactivity (not due to lack of interest in the game, of course, but lack of time in which to play).

My age when I first joined?
Hmm... below 16.

My occupational status when I first joined?
Student.

Game background prior to playing Cantr?
I enjoyed RPGs most of all, and anything with a good story that required intelligent gameplay. And of course I was limited to games that would run on low-end systems. Here are some examples of what I had played before starting Cantr:
  • Might and Magic (series)
  • Tomb Raider (series)
  • Starcraft
  • Diablo
  • Commandos: Beyond the Call of Duty
  • Pharaoh

I was 18/19 when I first started playing. I found it on a browser based games list, which I think was here: http://www.free-games.com.au/

Was working at the time and looking for something to fill the hours I spent staring at a computer screen...

It was different enough that I got into it. It was slow paced, but there was clearly a lot hapenning. I don't have a background in playing tabletop RPGs, or any other type of RPG for that matter.

I was bored since what ever I was normally playing was down that day. I went to mpogd.com, I've tested several of the games classified as free RPGs, I was going through them in alphabetical order. I think I was attracted by the free-form world and being allowed to play anything you want instead of being limited to choosing between warrior, mage or thief. The first couple of days were pretty silent but then I saw people rp'ing a mud fight and I figured I wanna be a part of this gang. :)

I think I was 19.

A student.

I was playing RaceWarKingdoms and got interested in free-form chat room roleplaying there. I started playing in a Finnish chat room one day when RWK was down and was trained by this hardcore drow player who taught if you can't come up with several sentences for your entrance, you're not worthy to play drow. I was a bit stunned at first and spent some days just watching other people play, not thinking I was skilled enough to start writing, but eventually I started writing myself and learned to put more realism and depth into my characters. I'd also been interested in tabletop games and LARP even though I was too shy to find a group to play with, I spent time studying rulebooks in the library and reading articles about roleplaying in magazines and newspapers. Actually, looking back to my teenage years, I was cripplingly shy and being anonymous and faceless online gave me a safe way of practicing my social skills.
