Two people in a town one of my chars are in were having a rather long whispered conversation, and partway through one of them accidentally spoke to all instead of to the other making it incredibly obvious that the two of them were having sex.

Two questions:

1. (Largely rhetorical) What's up with sex in whispers? Shouldn't everyone in town be able to see them? At least one of them has a building they could go do this in. What the crap, guys, seriously.

2. Everyone in town seems to be ignoring the slip up and pretending it was actually whispered. Is that what you would do? My char would definitely not ignore this if she knew it was going on, and it feels weird to pretend I don't know what's going on (Especially since I can see them. Again, what the crap?), but it doesn't feel right to act on the other player clicking the wrong button by mistake.

1. There are people who can't be bothered to take time out from other activities even while having sex so maybe they assume that it in fact takes only a few minutes, half an hour tops, and the fact that it's spread out to last several hours or days is just an inconvenience caused by having to write and maybe not being online at the same time, so the characters involved shouldn't lose a week worth of projects, interacting with other people and hunting due to an event that should take less than an hour in real life. Also just like with any rp, people can imagine that a location is not a one-dimensional spot so they can for example go behind a building or under a bush or down the beach, any place away from the main population.

2. Relating to the previous point, if the people rp'd slipping away, one of them posting in public doesn't magically transport them into the town square where everyone can see them. I think very few people actually rp they would do it in the middle of people, they tend to seek out a part of the room/outdoors area that's away from the other people. A couple having sex under a bush might make enough noise for others to realize what's going on, but if one of them happens to moan a bit too loud, it doesn't make the bush disappear. That's why it's polite to ignore the slip-up, unless the player who made the error reacts to it in public.

toss him the casual thumbs up and emote a wink next time they whisper. Or maybe a short "mind if I join in?"

I'm just kidding, really. I was actually going to post something similar to what you said, Seko, but you beat me to it. It's unfortunate that the way the game is programmed allow everyone to see everything in an entire town that covers a large area. In addition to that, it's not like a person pays attention to everything, even while they sleep. *shrugs* Like I said, Cantr is magic.

I have to say I have had one of those slip ups.. And I had people looking up at me and shaking their heads.. But no one has ever said anything.. And to be honest, there are many people that assume that when there is lots of whispering... they are having sex.. Which isn't always so..

i think its safe to say that whispering can be considered muffled noises, so people know *something* is going on, but cant hear what. perhaps you are out of sight? When you do a whispering slipup, you are a little louder than you intended, perhaps you said something you shouldnt have, or were too loud doing the ditty.

thats my take on it.

One of my characters (female) refused to have sex with someone in a public because there was nowhere private to go -- she could have just whisper-rp'd it as against the wall or something, but she said she didn't feel comfortable doing it the same room as other people, and even rp'd aloud that she was "getting out from behind him"

So if you have a character who doesn't mind getting down to in the middle of a crowd, they shouldn't feel shy about letting others know what they're doing. Otherwise, that's what buildings are for.

My reaction depends on the character, but if they slip up, I think it's more than fair to always take it as actually being visible to you. Like... if Two folks were getting it on in a grove of trees, and you happen to walk by the trees.... I mean, they're busted.

Hmm, could 'walking by' be simulated by creating a type of talking that can be heard only temporary (like 1 Cantr hour)? After this time has elapsed the talking will not appear on the events list any more.
Only people that are 'present' at the right time will be able to (over)hear what is being said.

That's stupid, if you want to have sex go to a room. If you dare to make it outside and screw it up, rp it out.

You're not rude, you're just sincere. >< Also haven't heard lot of "whispering sex", mostly because I don't have chars on the English zone where this seems to happen more often, plus there is actually lot of sex rpied in public in the Portuguese Zone, most notably a char known for practicing zoophilia and other paraphilias with his wife. Fun times.

But apart from my "At, My Zone Everything is Different" chat, what is really the problem with the whispering sex? Finding an explanation? Seko got a reasonable. Inducing people to actually use buildings? Got that too... but I have only one (cough*relevant) complaint: Can't we make out in more comfy places? I mean, making out in the city square or on the floor of a stone building doesn't sound comfortable(doesn't means it ain't fun ). *rally tone* We need more couches and rugs!!! Peace!!!

Not like there weren't furniture, but the old basic ones are too expensive. And what, public sex? I thought that was against the rules, or at least someone sure makes it sound like it was. Since you can't know if every player in town is 18 or older or willing to see such material unless they express it OOC I which case they most likely have seen something already. Someone should found a town of free love, they would just have to make sure that there are visible warning signs in all neighbouring towns and that all newspawns are dragged into a building before they have time to see anything.
