Roleplaying-how hard should we try?

Sorry for having two active topics in the same category, but this has been bugging me a bit. I play text-based MUD's and your role-playing quality greatly improves your enjoyment, and the enjoyment of others. In Cantr, the role-play seems a little bland, with simple speak and emoting. (most of the time)
Should we role-play as best as we can, with emotes in almost every sentence, and deep language? Or should we try to keep it light, and easy to do?

Whatever works for you. I don't think many players here play MUDs, but don't let that stop you from enjoying yourself. Some people will enjoy your characters, and some won't, but you can't please everyone. Lots of folks don'l RP at all, just speak and act.
Just remember that you shouldn't roleplay anything that the people that you're speaking to can't plausibly see (don't rp thoughts, for example).

Give it a go. But you'll probably find, in most cases, that no-one will interact and you'll get disheartened. That's a pity, but the lag exacerbates the lack of RP. When it's so difficult to get on at all, RP is the first thing to be skipped.

I'm doing a bit of roleplay right now that's working quite nicely. Getting responses and everything. I've actually had conversations with people who were online at the same time as me. I usually check my character almost every half-hour, since I spend most of the day on (or near) the computer anyway, so I can actually respond to people talking to me immediately. That helps.
But yes, at least try to RP a little bit, and if it doesn't work, oh well.

In Cantr I usually feel less is more.
With all of the detail drudgery that gets spit on screen, the last thing in the world I have patience for lately is reading through page after page of half baked melodrama.
I guess I find that the short sentence fragment approach to emoting blends into the game better. The inherent nature of the game mechanic is to provide minimal information and let the player's imagination fill in the gaps.
Some of my favorite characters of all time have been those that can pop out one sentence a day and tell you more about the personality over a week than some chatty twenty-something that is stuck monologuing.

I have to agree with wichita *feels dirty

* But quality of roleplay is a bigger factor than quanity, if you can say something just as well simiply as complicated, then you're all the better for going simple

ROLEPLAY!! You will also find that others out there would RP along with you.. depending on where you are.. and as it was stated, make the game fun for you.. don't NOT RP because someone else says they don't feel like reading it... if they don't want to read, they don't have to... think about it.. when you , as a person stands in the middle of town.. do you pay attention to EVERYYTHING going on around you? no,,, atleast I don't.. and neither do my charris..

That is usually the way my characters make friends, by finding others who actually will rp a little......simple things mostly, but you can tell when someone is willing to put a bit of effort into it, and that makes me want to interact with them more. It doesn't have to be melodrama, or the same thing over and over again to become annoying. Just simple every day actions occasionally that most never bother with. e.g. sewing or gardening

do it! the more who try the better chances are of stimulating others , yes lag causes some rp death but those who have the will to keepntrying can bring others back when lag susbides.

I think you want a lil balance. I have sme charris that are just sitting there patiently digging potatoes. As they sit there some random has 3 actions for everything he says and he says one sentence at a time. Roleplay wise he's pretty much having a spasm all over town. If I was going to rp collecting potatoes I would make a few grunts or whatever from bending over and getting up again and a few actions for *picks up a few potatoes* but if I start doing that I basically look like a try-hard and theres not much point
The most actions my guys do are probably smiling or absently stroking weapons. My guys just act normal. When you sit and talk to someone you don't shove your hands all over the place, you just talk.

I love when people RP, because I'm someone who feeds off the roleplay of others. I have some trouble getting it all started myself, but when someone else is the initiator, it works out great, for me at least.

I think I'll stick to some RP in places where it will have any value at all to other players.
