Boat stealing

One of my characters is an employee on a nice vessel. I had this character planned as being a nice, hard-working, friendly kind of guy, who wouldn't hurt a fly and is very loyal and reliable.
So now he is on this really nice ship, full of nice goods, docked in a harbour, and captain and other crew are off the ship in the town. So it's just a click of a button to steal this ship and explore the world.
This would of course be hugely out of character. So the temptation is to take the opportunity and just have a change of heart, take the ship, and enjoy my new adventure (as a player as well).
So how many people experience this kind of temptation in Cantr?
And if you experience it, what would you generally do?

I have indeed been in this sicutation, and what it boils down to is whether or not it is taking someone else's hard work (for me).
If I helped in the construction my toon would be more willing to take the boat, but if he just joined the crew as an addition he probably wouldnt take it.
unless, of course, he had been treated unfairly.

Very tempting as a player.
If it is indeed something your character would not do then don't.
Characters sometimes change in just a moment. Like when left
alone with a large amount of valuables.
What does your characters conscience say?
Now to your question.
Several of my characters have encountered simular circumstances.
None have taken andvantage of the situation. They never really
thought to do so.
Whatever your character decides, I hope you and that character have fun.
Edit: I will not take part in the poll.
If you have your character act from a poll/vote OOC,
that would be a CRB. (of all people you should know that)
Your character must act as your character would.
Act then ask.

That's a point.
I'm not planing what kind of persons my characters will be. Their behavior depend of environment and relationship with other people.
So, forget OOC! Only question is, is the captain friend of your character or not.

Depends on how the character has been treated. I would be very pissed if any of my crewmembers did that, but you can't really go very far without trusting people so I think it's eventually better to give them keys and let them take part in the steering, so far it has been enough to avoid the temptation.
If something feels "hugely out of character" then it is a CRB and should not be done. But if the character on the boat has been frustrated of the crew getting nowhere, just being stuck in towns for days gathering resources and never getting any business done, you might feel that "I could do better than this".

As Seko said..yes.
Also, sort of depends on the character for me. For example I have this character that acts all quiet and kind to everyone, when in real life, he is one of the biggest thiefs ever. (Stole over 7000 grams of iron and about 400 grams of steel)
And then my chacter Sury, there was a galleon sitting off in sea, just sitting there, so he brought it back to town for a better use.
Depends on situation I guess.

Oh, I didn't want to create the impression that I have my character's actions depend on the poll results

... I already decided on my action before posting, don't worry. I am just curious how players in general act in such circumstances. I thought it's a nice example of a discussion topic where you get a good sense of what Cantr is all about

...
If it helps: I did not move out-of-character and did not steal the boat

Check around before boasting about such small figures.
As for the poll, it depends. If the boat is owned by a couple then take it, they can gas as much as they like but their chances of ever catching you are very slim indeed now that they have nothing and you have it all. On the other hand, if the boat is known by many and the couple are known by many then it's a good idea not to. All things you can figure out IC, personally i'd normally take the risk and take the boat anyway.
It's not exactly the same situation but i've been in one where visitors arrived to my town on a boat, two went off overland while one stayed behind to guard their boat. My char was friendly and nice, but when the person died and the opportunity arose to leave the island, i took it.
I don't see anything wrong with that because if the dead char gave a damn about what happened to her boat then she would have been on it when she died.

This is the reason Captains always wait on the ship until everyone gets off. Even the most loyal of crew have thoughts of sailing away. One thing I always try and instill in my crew is the fact that if they ever steal the boat, they will be alone. Being part of the group is better than being alone with all the booty. Unless you plan to be alone forever... if you want your own crew, then you'll have to look over your shoulder forever as well.
I try to make sure eachmember of the crew has a boat docked to the big boat so if they betray me, hopefully they will just take the resources and undock.

Of course. How could I think so little of the creator of Cantr.
I am shamed.

My characters who have an average sense of morality would only take a boat if it was abandoned on the sea and it was obvious that nobody owned it anymore - and they wouldn't think that much of tossing the corpses overboard and taking all the booty for themselves -- my less scrupulous characters, however, might steal a boat if they had the opportunity to do so and could see that they had a moderate chance of escaping without punishment. In fact, one of my first characters was accidentally passed the key to a boat, and she, without looking back to see the circumstances under which she had recieved it, ran on and sailed for distant shores... of course, I know what it's like as a player to be foully betrayed and have my hard work stolen or destroyed, so I generally try to be considerate and moral when considering acts of theft (within the bounds of my characters' personality, of course).

I've got a char that stealed a boat, he found two unlocked boats and he was alone, so he just had to pick
This char is a thief, but I don't think my other good chars would steal a unlocked boat. Honestly, for me as a player, it's not tempting to steal a boat, I love this game anyway
Of course, if my char had been bad treaten, maybe he would have stealed it.

My chars have liberated a number of boats this way, but some have also resisted temptation in order to keep good company or shared goals. They rarely trust crew for this reason, but try to be generous to them, just in case.

Well, you can't really say it's out of character. Because you never know how you are going to act during certain situations in real life. It all depends on the situation.

I had one "good/nice" char who snapped and stole a lot of stuff after he experienced what he felt was a humiliating situation. Otherwise, my chars had somewhat set values upon spawning that they didn't stray far from. Some were born thieves or shady (opportunists), some wouldn't give in to temptation no matter what, some were willing to bend the 'rules' and rationalized their reasons for doing so, etc.
