I second that. History rox, I only wish more characters in cantr would keep it. There should be more in-game groups dedicated to keeping history.

It happens less and less because nobody is interested in funding historians, even though it take a hell of a lot more work to do than smelting iron
I'm surprised no rich individuals are ever willing to dip into that gigantic treasury of resources they have been hoarding over the years, and give a little to fund historians, librarians, cartographers, and writers of all sorts. It is, afterall, supposed to be a society simulator. It's this sort of closed-minded playing that really prevents the game from being 100% complete.
My favorite part about cantr is the ability to witness and semi-experience tonnes of different situations and perspectives, and to have the ability to do whatever you want. I can be someone at the top of the world (if I try hard enough to be it), and at the same time I can experience the dingy leftovers of life as well. It has also boosted my writing skills over the years. It's thousands of people writing a huge book that never ends, and even the authors don't know what will come next.

Amen to that.
I have a character that collects historical documents for the purpose of preserving history in a safe place. This character consistently encounters apathy or is ignored altogether, particularly at home. It’s enough to make my character want to sleep forever; although, there was one benefactor and a few other kind souls that have kept my character going.

The problem with Cantr historians is that many of them don't know where to start. So far, I've seen some libraries or documents that outline various facts such as foreign government structures, resource/trade routes and maps, but barely any real history. What you need is people to be taking down notes at the time of major events, even if it is just things like statistics. The easiest way for this to occur is to have characters keep notes of events they've been involved with, such as John Locke's "A Ranger's Tale".

You start these characters and you never really know what will become of them.

But that isn't very realistic either...
Until more recent times notes of history have rarely been penned for that reason. It shouldn't be up to people to write things down so people know about history.
It should be up to the dedicated historians in the future to figure it out from the notes of today.
To get "Such and such war happened at this time. This is known due to it being mentioned in the note written by so-and-so to their lover, dated xxxx"
That's how history has usually been done.

Yes! That's exactly what I thought it was like! I gigantic book that never ends! I love the history that exists all over the world and reading about the different people and societys that existed while at the same time playing small little lives that no-one but me and the few people they touch will ever remember. For me the fun lies in playing characters who mean nothing to the majority or to the greater course of things (more or less) but maybe mean a lot to a person or a few people, maybe a town.

And because I got carried away and forgot to answer the question...I have to go with the history too.
It was a nice shock when I returned that a few of my characters had mentions in some of the notes which accidentally recorded some of the great moments of Cantr.
Now, I plan to end up in them again, write them, or just vanish from history. Because they're all options, and that makes Cantr special.
