Exploring aids

Postby Razorlance » Thu Oct 04, 2007 1:18 pm

I was wondering how many characters have made either a sextant or a viewing aid (binoculars, telescope etc) or both?

I bet ProgD or someone would be able to give me the answer instantly, but I'll add a poll anyway.

You forgot the option "none of the above". I've seen some binoculars and maybe a telescope but none of my characters have gotten to touch one.

I have never made either, but I have seen a half dozen high end viewing aids. Most were built by the Heaven's Tavern. They had quite the aluminum factory going there for awhile (they built a bus after all), and gave me a few kilos to play around with.

I've made a sextant, but never used it at sea.

I have all but one part for making a telescope, so in a couple of years I will have one made. 8)
Another couple of chars are thinking about getting something right now.

After spending a year collecting stuff in mountains one char of mine made one simple telescope. It'll take a while yet to go exploring. The set of resources is pretty tough, suppose you put your mind to it and make 4 where would you sell them? My exploring chars don't have one, they're by the coast and i've never seen any of these items advertised.

One of my characters is trying to build them for selling, he's already got his first order. Now that he's got all the tools made, he just needs the resources, and only the bauxite for the case and soda for the lens are a problem so far, although he had a good supply of window glass at the moment. The rest of the resources needed are all nearby. :D

So it works on land too, or you just haven't used it at all?

The census of characters carrying these items is as follows

Sextant 13% [ 4 ]
Viewing Aid (binoculars, telescope etc) 71% [ 17 ]
Both of the above 12% [ 3 ]

Total Characters : 24

There are another 5 sextants and 11 viewing aids not being carried, all in different locations

The Sextant tells you your current longitude and latitude relative to reference point stored in the sextant - It also tells you the direction and the distance to that reference point . The reference point is set by the character.

The english version of the message displayed when you use it is along the lines of "Relative to the last reference point, you are at latitude #X# and longitude #Y#. The reference point is in direction #DIR#, at a distance of #DIST#."

I like the explanation Chris, sounds almost to good to be true i mean that's a medieval invention isn't it?
Suggestion for RD, two of the resources involved could become more abundantly available, i mean particularly along coasts.

One of my charries has a hell of a lot of bauxite, probably enough to fund at least twenty binoculars. Her only problem is being stuck far, far away, in a war ravaged land, in some lonely mountains whehrhe anyone who passes through hasn't a clue what it's used for. It's the fruit of many years hard labour without even a shovel. There's zinc, too...

And the sleeping doesn't help. Travellers are gone before I get a chance to wake her up. If she wasn't so damned alone I wouldn't mind, but it's incredibly frustrating.
