There is another problem i think. What if new language group spown near english? Maby even near not so peaceful ones? Those newbs probably will dye and nobody of them will want to play. So i think new groups should have their own island. Later like in real world they will be able to colonize other islands as well.

Cantr is five steps ahead of you, mate.

It already is MUCH more realistic than that.

We have language-Countries in Cantr.

Meaning, if you're Russian, you'll spawn in a Russian continent. If you're english, English continent. Sometimes we make contact with each other- somtimes war- then the fun starts.

So yeah.. it's been done.

Ever heard of people centric spawning? The island that was originally Russian now has more English spawning than Russians, and some Swedes too. I've seen one Polish person spawning on an English island, most likely there's been more than one. There are multinational locations, but mostly one group has far more people than the other(s) and minority newspawns will be lonely.

Many people are not ready to start teaching their language to a foreigner who has no basic knowledge of grammar or anything and is not even allowed to study outside the game. All they are allowed to know is what they learn ingame. It's cool when people have their characters learn things wrong sometimes, even if the player in fact knew the language. My Swedish character has ran into several Esperanto people and I recognize several words and phrases based on context and some similarities to English - but my character doesn't know English so he shouldn't understand as much. And when people are not willing to teach you new words, there's no room for playing stupid, it's easier to just assume that your character can guess the same things you recognize as a player.

What about abstract words then? How can you ask someone how to say "teach me" in your language? What's the word for good, for bad, for beautiful? For "I love you"?

If two characters meet that don't speak the same language, and neither do their players, it's impossible for them to teach language to each other, simply because emoting is impossible.

Yes Doug, that's what I've always said. Thus, unfortunately, my chars usually ignore foreigners.
btw I've seen a note claiming to be an English/German/Russian dictionary. My char didn't look at it. Surely this is OOC... making the process even more difficult.

Why do you think its not posible? There is room for drawings as wel, so you can draw something and then give to others. Ofcourse there is place for misunderstanding, but still, you can learsn basic words and then whith note help eaven try to sell/buy things. We have done such a thing and it works prety well. for example if my char would learn english then it would be only like this:

"Me be friends. I name Smith." Perfeckt gramar not posible.

This is why, a while back, I suggested pre-determined emotes. But some people are too blind to see the logic behind that.

So you'd have a button called 'Wave'.. then once you wave you could say 'Wave'.. you'd have a button called 'Smiles' so you smile.. but it's translated into their language as an emote.

All of that you can wright like this *smiles* grins* *waves his hand*

Thats how i and others have learned portugues. If those emotes will slow down the game i'm tottaly agaist it. The game is qiute cracky allready.

Cantr Wiki - international emotes
With thanks to Wichita

I'm assuming that, whilst a character cannot speak another language if they haven't learned some of it IC, the player can emote for them in another language, as actions are universal, but in a text-based system, we have to deal with the language barrier somehow...

Personally, I would emote twice - once in the character's language, and again in the language of the other character, but restricting spoken words to what they know IC.

That page does need more 'officialisation' - could we have a PD decision on its proper use, and an IG and forum announcement?

I think, spawning in different language areas is already forced.
If not, can anybody explain, why I spawned (3 times) in the German/spanish area when I started a Dutch charrie?
:?

I think you have spowned where was at least one of the same language as you. Maby, they have left a few days ago?

and we emote like this *papurto galva(shakes his head)* So first is our language and second is english. I think eavryone that plays this game knows english. at least they can emot whith it. Otherwise how did they begin the game?

Wrong. I know of several spanish players that don't know english (some of them playing longer than a year ago). And they found the game via spanish MOG advertising webs or friends advice.

shapukas wrote:at least they can emot whith it.

Almost everyone know about the basic emotes, those that are easely converted to symbols (like O_O, :D, ¬¬', etc).
But (complex) gesturing is another matter.

So this is true:

Doug R. wrote:If two characters meet that don't speak the same language, and neither do their players, it's impossible for them to teach language to each other, simply because emoting is impossible.

At least while you don't use automatic translators, that is not frowned upon for translating gesturing.

Sure.
In the beginning, there was a German/Spanish island near a Dutch/French island.
With the time, the French became almost extincted by the lack of characters and the excessive animal preassure, whilst the Dutch were strong in several cities.
German founded several colonies in other islands, included the Dutch one. But Dutch didn't found any colony in the Spanish/German island.
When the Spanish players base started to grow, they begun to spread all over the German area and the Dutch island (mainly due to lack of wood and total absence of rubber and salt, present in the Dutch island).
Meanwhile, the Dutch players base was experiencing some difficulties, and Dutch grandeur declined, becoming vulnerable to the animal preassure. And finally some of them crossed the puddle and founded some Dutch settlements in the Spanish/German island, free of dangerous beasts.
Now, there are several Spanish settlements in both islands, as well as Dutch ones.

Currently, AFAIK, there are more Dutch characters in the S/G island than in the Dutch one, and those in the S/G are more disperse (as they don't need to be grouped to fight the animals) so there are more possible spawning points there than in the Dutch island.

So you will likely spawn in the Spanish/German/Dutch island, more times than in the Dutch/Spanish/(French) one.
And, in that case, you have to be grateful to the chance. It is harder to survive in the other side of the puddle ;)
