Successful Explorers

I was jus wondering what makes a successful explorer, like Dust on the K island, R.i.P. I have a character that is exploring and mapping the whole new island, he has succesfully managed to map out the whole region. He is not even 21 yet and has mapped out the whole Karnon region and is now moving to the Kwor region. It has take around 9-10 days to do it all..
I don't think thats long enough, and just wondered why he was going so fast,m he is putting effort into the mapping.
But maybe, i might have something to do with him only carryoing essentials, less than 1000 grams food. I am not expecting him to map the whole island on that amount, but just that it makes him go faster and get his job done quicker. he does not have any thing else on him other than that small amount of food.
I think that's what can make a good explorer, 'how they manage their weight' because some explorers may think they will be travelling for years so they get 15000 grams of food, it would take them 5-10 years to map out a good sized island, but it will take only 1-2 maybe 3 years if they carried a smaller amount of food, and only stopped when desperately needed too.

I suppose Dust became so well known was because he made (I belive) the first map of the island and so after that it was just a case of a few updates, everybody had a 'Dust Map' in fact they still do. A good explorer has to really see everything for themselves, its no good just adding maps together to make a big one IMO.
Weight is a big problem for explorer-type people so it means they're often vunerable to attack but also it depends or not on weather they are trying to get around as fast as possible, whilst mapping or just going around the world in a similar fashion but better prepared.
In my experience an iron shield is invaluable and easier to come by than a steel shield, also a shovel or dung fork saves you time when it comes to food and the a dung fork doubles as a weapon but then again you may decide you'd rather just get a days worth of food by hand then move on.

I only have one "explorer" char, Armedian Koloff, but I just started small, stayed close to food sources, and very rarely carried more then 5000g of total equipment and food.

And what an awesome map Armedian has come up with this time.
Keep up the good work!

So you are Armedian. Most detailed map ever, very impressive, Jerry. Only thing is, I dont like using it as a guide, because it is so old, so it doesnt have the new resources, and its just too detailed.

You can never make everyone happy, I guess

I think the Best map i have seen (and probably most people in the game have seen it) is the picture one, it really is a lot easier than one's that are just words, i think the map was made by Ryan ashcroft or someone like that.

What area does that cover?

it covers most of the main island, it has Blaman, Hillio, Blerk, Cantr city, Naron, Sjoftich, Alenz, thats all ican think of the top of my head. Haven't you seen it yet?!?!?!? Nearly all of my chars have seen it as it's in SO MANY places.

Nope, none of them have seen it, as of yet. Some of my characters haven't even heard of half of the above mentioned places.

I know what map you mean, it really is the best I've seen anywhere and you can update it yourself because it was left on editable. Most maps fail to do this and so become useless once you find a new place (in that you can't add to the map)

Armedian found a copy of Lad's map in Knatr Desert not long ago, most of the places you meantion will be available on his map soon, and if things go well, his picture map will also include much of that area by 800. Very many people haven't seen his newest map though, it's only been dropped in a few places so far and has a much more detailed physical map on it. I'm glad he's on the island he's on though, I figure he can map till he dies of old age and not see everything.

Hmm, maybe it's a good idea that my Explorer left it on editable then..
