Do we want this player?

MC Chris on KH2. -- Rated M for Mature

Fans of the VG Cats will have likely already seen this. I repost it here mostly to spread the silly, but it does also make me wonder if we really want to try and recruit this kind of player to Cantr or not. :D

I personally don't feel too upset when hearing these kind of "this game is boring" kind of arguments from newer players because...well...Cantr ain't Reisdent Evil 4, nor is it supposed to be, so why should I apologize? :)

Hmm, looking at that video, do we really want to bring that level of grammar to Cantr...?

"He killed you're parents"

"His Axe's is on fire"

"Its up to us"

Oh dear  :(

We've already got that level of grammar running rampant both in Cantr and on the forums... along with the grammar of "u" and "ur".

The drive so far has been to recruit players from wherever possible. Heaven knows we need more, but you have to balance quality with quantity.
Those that resort to cell-phone speech probably haven't the patience for the game so they won't last, thus more bodies to bury.

We should be trying to attract people whose grammar and roleplaying are at least one notch up from the "u got pwned, no0b!!1!" crowd, I think.

So where, exactly, do we find those quality players you're talking about? :)

I do think the game needs more of them as we seem to be losing them disproportionally ... That requires improving recruitment and improving their ability to enjoy the game ... But on the first, where should be look? (On the latter we have plenty of discussion already ;) ...)

That is the problem. I have no idea how recruiting is done already, really, but, as I suggested once, is there a way of attracting older players who may well have the time in retirement, and the experience to play 60 y-o chars effectively?

(On the latter we have plenty of discussion already ;) ...)[/quote]

Do what Agar suggested, write reviews and advertise on MUD sites (especially major ones like TMC...I noticed Cantr was listed there.)

Yeah there are some idiots there (*coughGodWarscough*) but the players who are into RP Intensive and RP Enforced games (which Cantr is) take roleplaying very, very seriously and might be into this sort of game. Also people who are into MUDs with detailed craft systems...I know that was a major selling point for me when I first joined.

I agree with the idea about the MUD sites. I posted a couple of sites that I ran across on the Marketing suggestions thread. I noticed that cantr was listed but the information had not been updated since 2003. It makes me wonder though if some of those quality players we have had in the past found the site through those avenues.

By the way, I am not at all suggesting that we don't still have quality players today. You know what I mean.

Perhaps you guys should post links on the forum when you see a MUD site to comment on? MD can use those posts to find places to watch, and other players can add their own comments and reviews and votes - the more activity there is around an ad we place, the more it will be noted. In other words - this is typically something the MD cannot do by itself and we need the support of players en masse.

We're on the same wavelength, Jos.

I just posted an advert here:

This is a hard-core RP site, so let's keep the advert thread bumped.

Every time someone raises the subject of not wanting players who can't spell, can't punctuate, aren't quite middle class enough, haven't read the right nerdy books, or seen the right movies, or don't have OCD a little part of my love for cantr dies.

It's all so self centred. It's a game. It's dying (the english language part). Right now in game I would happily swap 5 Nitefyres, literary pretentsions and sleepy old characters doing nothing much, for one new player who comes along and plays the game with enthusiasm and an enquiring, exploring mind. I don't care what form of english they use as long as they can be understood. Being there and looking around, talking and trying things is what's good. RP, 'appropriate language' can develop afterwards with a bit of peer pressure and gentle tutuion.

We had a thread about emoting in the past tense recently - I hate this, it destroys my immersion of the game, but someone is making an effort and playing the game so I'm prepared to let it slide to allow them in to have some fun. Cantr is not some game like D+D where you have to read a novel to understand the rules. The more prescriptive and bitchy you are about it, the more players will leave. IMO

http://www.mudconnector.com/

Not a MUD site...this is the MUD site.

They have a special forum for advertisements, and everytime someone writes a review of a game the link stays on the main page until 12 more get written for other games and push it off.

Can't? More like won't. (And I'm going to ignore the rest of the quoted sentence because it's just the usual inflammatory dickery.)

Phalynx, you know what? I'm getting kind of sick of you constantly targetting me because *gasp* I have the audacity to wish that people who signed on to play a roleplay game would actually make even the tiniest effort to roleplay. To show some signs that they realize they're playing a role, and that role is not themselves at their computer in a chatroom.

When ever someone types something like 'hey im mike can i have this sheild hjere ill be good lol///' or just in general says 'omg' or 'lol' or 'ur' or uses emoticons (and it happens more and more now) I die a little inside, and it destroys the immersion.

Newsflash: I am a terrible speller and an even worse typer. The only reason anything I write is readable at all is because I respect the other players, I care about my characters, and I'm not lazy.

See, when I'm about to post something on the forum, and especially in the game, I take four, sometimes even five entire seconds to read over what I've written. Occasionally... (and I know it's a little extreme, I guess I can't expect everyone to have all the extra time and computer knowhow to go this far...) ...occasionally I will actually use this complicated program called MSWord, along with the arcane practice known as 'copy and paste' to verify that I spelled a word like.

Once in a while I even use dictionary.com, but we're venturing into forbidden knowledge there that only the elite D&D nerds who like to read novels for fun know of, so I won't even suggest that the average person try it. (You just wouldn't be middle class enough.)
