Hi folks. Just started a couple weeks ago.
Been mudding for the past 8 years, but just don't have the 100 hours per month anymore. Cantr might be a game where I can fully participate and yet keep my hours down without disrupting anything. We'll see.
This post is to assure potential players that Linux and Firefox work here. Yes, I've found other posts about Linux, but this subject description makes it clear.
At the moment I'm running Knoppix and Firefox from a flash pen.
In a few months there will be $100 computers circulating around the world, well $140 at first, but the price will drop like a rock.

Cantr - multilingual, requiring little bandwidth and no download or client - is positioned well to attract many new players. Why not let them know right on the main web page that Linux works?

Eh. It's not as if it's not made adequately clear that Cantr's text-based, and that virtually guarantees Firefox and Linux compatibility. I think most Linux users have the basic intelligence to make that connection. And Linux is a niche market at best; possibly a desirable one, but still small. We'd be better off promoting Cantr's accessibility - there are far fewer games that are handicapped-accessible than are Linux-compatible.
The OLPC is not really a big thing yet, and definitely not something to build a marketing strategy around. Also, Cantr doesn't have many of the major languages of likely OLPC users.
And I say this as a Linux user who's been exposed to large amounts of OLPC hype through Slashdot and MIT.

Yes Sho. I found this game on the www.whitestick.co.uk site, so it is being promoted slightly in the blind-user field.
Admittedly it's not fully accessible, (eg sailing) but there's enough of the game not to need that. I know accessibility conflicts with many of the suggestions proposed, (free roaming, probably,) but the game staff do seem to be trying their best

So sorry, Sho. I must be one of those rare Linux users who lacks intelligence.
I first saw a listing for Cantr at a site that lists free games. Turns out that many of the games are not truly free. The site indicates which games are browser-based. Turns out that some require Windows.
So by the time I actually came to the Cantr site, the #2 thing on my mind was "Can I actually play it using Linux/Firefox?".
As you know, the word "text" appears nowhere on http://www.cantr.net/
(At least not on the English version)
We can ignore that there is a little uncertainty, but what does that get us?
Brazil and Argentina are anticipated to be among the first to use the laptop. In fact, the great bulk of South American country governments have expressed interest.
There's an interesting map at http://laptop.org/
Also, at the top of that page is a listing of languages that has lots in common with the language listing at the top of the Cantr home page.
We could ignore that correlation, but what does that get us?
There is always a reason to do nothing. Just make a suggestion and see what happens.
Build a marketing strategy?
Clearly, I posted too soon. Maybe the post infringed upon someone's turf. I'll be more careful.

Thanks for the welcome!
No problem here. I'm aware that individual postings in a forum may not reflect the playerbase. It's normal for only a small portion of players to post.
There is a personal problem I have with forums, generally. It's a tension between yearning to absolutely roast someone and remembering that it is my responsibility as a player to help maintain a friendly atmosphere where other players are comfortable. I would rather have the privilege of posting without the responsibility
Actually, it's rare for me to participate heavily in a forum so don't be surprised if I am mostly silent.
