If it's a place any sort of character could work, look for a role that's not being filled, or one that could lead to an interesting support role or personality clash for RP with the more active chars already there.

And there's nothing saying your char has to start off with a fully developed personality, maybe just do the usual newspawn stuff and see who talks to them and what their impressions of the place are and go from there.

Thanks Marian. I guess I don't always have to start out with a black or white personality (a super strong one). It could be gray, at least for a while. *nods*

You could allow the character to develop based on interactions, if you are starting with a blank slate. If you do have an idea of what type of character you want to become, then your actions are set towards that RP goal imo. I look at alot of the successful people in USA (successful being a separate debate topic) and I see a variety of personalities; humble; arrogant; loud; quiet; driven; lucky (perceived); savvy etc. What they all seem to have in common, besides usually wealth, is a vision and set of actions that led to that 'success'. Lucky being the possible exception.

I have a few characters that I knew what their personalities would be ahead of time and I actually named them as such. Their ambition changed somewhat when their skill-set was discover, e.g. "oh this guy is going to be a shipbuilder".

Be well

My favorite characters are ones that I have a clear idea about their personality... ie. hyper, flirtatious, slow, etc. Nothing too preplanned. The ones I start out with no clear idea always stay vanilla.

Yeah, I try to avoid setting hard goals, but most of mine start off with a basic personality. Not something as blatant as 'good' or 'evil' but as some combination of more flexible things like optimistic, or opportunistic or snarky or lazy or thoughtful or silly or compassionate or hot tempered or...well, <insert adjective here>. And then I just let them develop naturally based on their reactions to their surroundings and other chars after that.

That's exactly what I do. Start with a general personality type, or a singular "quirk" and develop things from there.

However, I've tried starting "blank" characters before and developed their personality based on the first few things/people they encounter. For some, they spawned in sleepy towns and are still pretty generic workers or starved if there was no self-farmable foods. For others, they became quite interesting and favorite characters of mine. :)

Overall though, I think having a vague and semi-defined idea works best, but if you make the concept too detailed, it can sometimes wind up being at odds with the "local culture", so it's best to keep your ideas general and light-weight enough to adapt easily in your head as needed.

I decide on gender, what way they swing and whether or not they are going to have a spawn defeat before making the character. I then look at the location they spawned in and whether they are weaker/stronger than average to get a simple personality and develope like made over the first few days to get something slight 3D from the character.
