Hehe, I have almost no clue what any of you guys are talking about, just the stuff I've pieced together, but great thread; this is the kind of thing I love about Cantr :)

LOL, almost makes me impatient; I want people complaining about a couple of my chars on the forums, too. :) But hopefully they have long lives ahead of them, so they may eventually be in a position to make a mark on the world...

This is funny, my last char in that region was killed trying to raise an army to take out the MacGregors, he was ratted out by someone who didn't believe the things he found out about them...

That char was fun. His friend is now a permanent guest. Good kid.

Through out the Crisis, there was at least one Ranger in the town of Krif-

Anderton Cale left immediately for KHN upon this news, to size up the situation.
Gary Drenth headed toward Krif, and arrived soon there after.
John Locke was notified, and asked Thomas Petty to come along.
Gary Drenth departed rather hastily, but soon thereafter Louis O came along.
The town of Krif/along with the Rangers, captured Yahsmina.
Anderton Cale came back, relieved John from the duty station.

So, you had upwards of 3 Rangers there during the crisis.

As well as the main KRDF contingent, and certain respected KDS members. SF was also notified.

Thanks for that outline. I agree that there was always one Ranger there throughout the crisis, but were they there to defend Krif from the MacGregors or also to try and keep the Krif people in check? And of that above list, no less than three headed for MacGregor territory at some point, two of whom possibly played a mediating role, though I suspect they went to warn Gregor. All of this my characters saw. Everything they saw was remarkably accurately portrayed in John Locke's 'The Ranger's Tale'. One thing that amazes me is how the pirate thing happened in just a matter of days.

Krif (John was there when Gary left to mediate with the MacGregors)
942-6: You see Gary Drenth, a man in his fourties leaving Krif, taking Seatown Road to Krif Hills (north).

Krif (John was there and Anderton not back yet)
943-7: Guardian John Locke, a man in his thirties says: "Umm by the way, why didn't Gary use the other ranger bike?"

KHW (John arrived in MacGregor territory)
949-2: You see Ranger Service Transport 4 arriving in Krif Hills (west), coming from Krif Road to Krif.
[...]
949-8: Guardian John Locke, a man in his thirties says: "Thanks. I don`t dare attack a lion in case MacGregors are in town. My suggestion is wait for a Gregor patrol. Gregor in grievious anger declared war on the Region, but then declined his declaration...weird stuff."

So the whole capturing-Yahsmina business and John knowing that Gregor had declined his own declaration of war took only 5 days! Like I said, John gets around.

By the way, there are now newspawns in the Garden who still believed a matter of mere days ago that a huge army of gigantic somewhat Scottish types would invade them at any moment. You do know that, don't you? :P

Which leads me to wonder why there are so few newspapers in Cantr. A sign that overall social order is Feudal rather than Bourgeois? This game is doubtless an excellent place to study urban legends and the like. Maybe Jos really is a sociologist.

That the Rangers did a very poor job of briefing Krif about the information from the hills supports the theory that they really just went up there to protect Gregor...

Well, the rumours are not going to die soon since talk about peace is sure to spread slower than talk about war. Gahak heard somewhere in Djorf hills pretty vague stuff about "some clanleader gone mad and threatening to take out Drojf and Krif", then he went to Seatown and heard a new reference to this thing, after that he has been sure to spread out his (limited) information about the matter anywhere he goes.

I agree with both statements....
If Gregor really meant to carry out his plan (which still remains the question), it would have caused a lot of deaths, mostly in Krif as they are nearest, but would have in the end resulted in the annihilation of the Clan, unless Seatown Forest and the Rangers remained either neutral or joined them....Gregor might be pathologically paranoid but he's no fool!

On the other hand, I don't think any army in the region present at this time would be able to destroy the Clan in a full frontal attack on Castle Mac Gregor.

As a player I know what happened at Do Urden vs the Lad Empire, as the late Griogal the Black Wolf, was one of Do Urden's front fighters. I know I'm biased but the Mac Gregors are nowadays by far better equipped than their opponents and in number of active members, they're similar to Do Urden, if not superior. Besides that, they're nicer people (except for Gregor and Seven at times, but they're just the old generation of paranoid fools).

Well, yes, I had the impression that he was...

You're making a major wrong assumption though. While the world is more Feudal than my understanding of Bourgeois (remember, I keep saying, trade doesn't happen much), the reason for abysmal communication is something else entirely. Specifically, the place is immensely primative.

If you thought it was hard to own a horse in the middle ages, you should consider how hard it is to get a bike in cantr. Amassing the resources to create it takes years of dedicated labor. And that's without any human obsticles.

If you do make one, it certainly isn't to be a message-carrier. No one pays much for delivery of messages, and not many messages need delivering. So if the news does go through it'll be on foot.
Furthermore, no one will pay for news at all unless they sent you to get it in the first place.

So fast news delivery is a job for bike-owners who don't aspire to gain any more wealth in their lives... And would rather ride down roads day after day and spend their time in towns trying to get apathetic locals to tell them the news.

Not many people, that is

I must say I admire those who still carry out Glen Morangie's legacy...the GM Postal Postmen and -women

If would be nice if more people took advantage of the postal service though.

Mine did get about 4 letters on her last round trip run.

Really? Almost every Mac Gregor any of my characters has come across stands out as an asshole, except Danny Mac Gregor...but he has left the region.

Their upper ranks at least are arrogant however you approach them. I doubt anything, including arriving at the head of a 20-person heavily equipped army would change that. But if you're properly self-effacing and follow their clearly displayed rules, they seem to get to like you. I would guess that's the usual clan perspective...they think they're demigods, so if you don't treat them as such they get annoyed, but if you do you gain their favor, since so few people do.

The problem is all us 1-st world liberal democracy types evidently have trouble understanding that there really isn't anyone out there looking out for us, there isn't any compulsion to permit free speach. That your nice bill of rights or whatever doesn't apply here. The clans understand this, and have taken the aristograt/millitary strongman/warlord/the guys with the guns position.

But no, it doesn't count as nice to kill people and imprison people for speaking negatively of you, or demand everyone give you titles, or do any of the other things I actually have evidence of the MacGregors doing. But that isn't the point, really.

The biggest problem is that they demand such huge respect in their homeland, always mentioning that people who visit them are guests etc., but when they go to other places they don't repay that respect.

It would be acceptable to deal with their customs, titles and stiffness...but then it should go both ways.

You see, that's assuming that everyone is equal, or something. Get that out of your head entirely, they certainly have. If they ever got it in. That's a recent invention, and there is no reason for the MacGregors to believe in it.
