Not me. I suck it up and read through it just in case. Whispers I ignore except for who's doing the whispering (it often comes up later), dragging resources I ignore, town leaders running in and out of buildings in long strings I ignore except for the last, and only so I can say I know where they are.

Glad I'm not the only one with this predicament. :(

I like to think I'm a hybrid between roleplayer and simmer, but realistically I know I'm mostly a roleplayer. Therefore, I tend to do my roleplaying while working on something. Granted, I have characters that are pretty much only good for roleplay, and even my "simmers" do a fair amount of roleplay (but that's due to town circumstances and the fact that the ones with things to achieve can't because of lack of necessary resources).

Yes, all those, too. Especially since it's impossible with the current system to pick up notes, keys, etc. except one at a time (e.g. when someone dies), generating huge amounts of spam for everyone else in the town, and then having to drag/carry all those different resources to places, each with its own message. I cringe every time my character does it, because I know it's gonna generate so many messages for everyone else that no one really cares about. I totally agree with Surly that being able to filter all that definitely needs to come first, before the hopes of anything better.

On the other hand, contrary to Doug and CN, I don't make the assumption that anything someone else says that isn't to my char, or with my char's name, isn't of interest to my char. So I have to read everything....

And Arenti, I never actually assume whispers are sexplay, and indeed, never overheard anything to that effect. I only said that because I've heard so much on the forums about that being the case. Usually I just assume they are saying:
"<gejyspa's char> is a total jerk"
"{OOC} Yeah, and so's his/her player, LOL!"

(not that I've heard those, either)
(but yeah, if you're gonna engage in PDA, then we should all be able to see it. Get a room, you two, or you three! If I wanted to see a live sex show in the town square, I'd go over to _________ (fill in the blank with whatever cantr town is the seediest). Whispering it is simply so breaking the fourth wall that it should be a CRB, in my opinion (unless it's prefaced with the oft-suggested "goes behind a tree/rock/house", at least) (sorry for all the nested parens. It's the LISPer in me))

It's not so much an assumption as it is a necessity. I wouldn't have time to play if I was reading all the stuff on my screen. I fully realize I may miss something, which is why my characters have been intentionally trying to get away from noisy areas.

It's also more realistic, in some ways, for chars to miss things. Certain chars of mine, I skim the events because they're the type that may not pay attention to everything. Then again, I get a little irritated with chars who say "where did whatsherbutt go?" when whatsherbutt just walked into a building half a page down.

I think by now I have played enough to post here.

I love the role play and I believe my chars are simmers. But, to qualify, personally I hate the false dramas. I do have some drama queens and I did develop personalities for my chars, but I think there is drama and then there is drama where someone creates a silly situation and gets upset over something small/ nothing. I love real drama, hate I'm running down the road as I'm having a tantrum over nothing.

Except for the first two points, I love Dougs list, but he must hate my noisy, loud and chatty chars. Most of mine are friendly and love a chat, will create an abundance of useless text to be read. But those do have success engaging chars to work for and with them. My chars are rarely idle and I hate idleness. Most of mine actively get others involved and working. But there are a few different types of work. There's working to gain wealth for oneself or another. There's building up a town for wealth or useful, practical reasons. But there is useless work, for no good reason. I only use the last option as I have seen it used by others - to motivate and bring a goal to a group. I reaslise that to simulate a society, it needs more - a common goal or as in history lessons, a dictator to hate, a tyrant to escape, wars over resources, land, personality conflicts, etc. It needs a vision, not just a work goal. So, personally I think the simmers need the roleplay. Roleplayers can exist on the otherhand without simmers.

Whispering is a problem if it's all that goes on, but sometimes I wish things were whispered more if trivial. Then I don't need to bother, but I do like those that emote publically so you get an idea. Eg: A fight or a trade. My town leaders and traders whisper to those who want it and it seems to work. Gosssip in whispers is okay as well as it gives an element of drama. I have no problem talking about other chars in game. I love that you can be overheard. But whispers can be isolating and I think everyone likes to be engaged in the conversation and feel part of things as they do in real life. So, towns need to give that opportunity for - relavent- opinions on future planning, laws etc.

I hate players that are too lazy to read and then ask my char the details, or miss a trade or relavent piece of information. If I went to the trouble of typing something in that you were meant to read and you ignore it, my char will be hurt and may likely ignore yours or write them off as a serious pawn in my game plan. Having said that recently I got very frustrated by a char in a large town and having to read all the useless text to get to the bits I wanted. The text was irrelavant to my char and she had no idea what to make of most of it.

Now that I have chars who can, I try to engage other players and allow them to achieve their goals both as a player and a character. I think that is most important to retaining players. My 'nice' ones will delegate responsibility, teach and train. Others will if it's 'in character'. But yes, I agree I find it hard to deal with characters that are aimless or whose goals are only silly dramatic non-drama or want sex with no other roleplay or work or who just don't care. I love the quirky, well played, well thought out tossers who do zip though. I guess it's all about entertainment value. I love those less talented who try (me, mine fit in here) and give it a go.

Having said all this I break my own rules as sometimes my characters have a mind of their own and it takes over. But, hey, let's have some fun and see where it leads.
Reveal to me the mysteries
Can you tell me what it means?
Explain these motions and metaphors
Unlock these secrets in me
Describe the vision, the meaning is missing
Won't anybody listen?

It's possible. Canada isn't that far away.

I think I agree with you nearly perfectly there, Addicted. :) I like playing with a good balance like that.

I hate trivial, flippant, useless drama (especially that which bleeds into RL issues- pretendy fucking funtimes, people- remember, it ain't real), but intense, real drama (IC sort of real of course) can be gratifying when resolved and create a fun, interesting atmosphere to play in.

I do also agree that trivial things that pertain to only certain people, should be whispered. And I don't think that all things irrelevant to a character necessarily mean they can't spark some interaction with them or others. Lines of whispering is about as frustrating and boring as spoken lines of triviality sometimes.

I'm not as bad with the worker bee syndrome on my characters as I used to be. I used to hate it if there was not a percentage of some project by their name. Now it more depends on the character. Mine work regularly, but usually intersperse it with a break now and again (perhaps my own laziness nowadays). At the moment they're just helping others anyway for the most part and haven't figured out what they want.

That smiley might have given away one of yours, and if I'm right, then there'd be no point in wa. It'd end up being "Who can get the first hit without the shield?" In which my character would win because mine has the better weapon and probably shield.

That is, assuming you play that character.
