I like what I think was the originally intended system from what I see. More primitive type machines are available, but not their advanced counterparts. Unfortunately, I think most people don't use them because they give less return product on input resources than they're advanced counterparts. I think if the amount of additional time they took was increased, but their input-to-output resource ratio was increased to their advanced counterparts, more ships would use them because they don't feel like they're losing goods when they do.

Besides, people on ships usually have plenty of idle time, but resources are at a premium.

The other thing that really needs to be done before you see people bother to use machines on ships is to allow boats to continue sailing when nobody is on deck. This lets people work together without having to split up and lose out on RP in order to get things done.

You need a cellar for fermenting most beverages. The climate on a ship would lead to spoilage.

Too bad we can't distill in a bathtub on ship.

If Cantr had toilets we could be making some prison brew on ships.

Yarrr.... some tomatoes, a toilet....

Of course, 'prison brew' on ships... easily leads to talk about the wrong type of sailors and a certain type of pirate... which would easily bring up prison brew again... ahem, I'll just go think of something else...

But yes, two of my seafaring chars feel a great void in their lives because no booze can be made on ships lol...
hmmmmm beer.... pizza.... computers.... women... stir-fried furry little critters...
