Are you suggesting we are not careful?! :p

And yes, we use a system very similar to CVS (Subversion) for our code, but the issue is DB integrity, and sometimes we make manual changes in there. Keeping a CVS copy of a huge database doesn't seem like the best idea, I think :) ... But we do make backups of course on a daily basis.

This time a lot of the delay was due to me trying to figure out how to open the backup, as it was in a strange file format. Now that we managed that, next time should be much easier. The other ProgD members were actually extremely fast in writing scripts and queries to correct inconsistencies once the backup would be available, so the whole delay was solely because of the backup issue (well, and me going out to the theatre just 5 minutes before I could finish the job ;) - but had to meet someone ...).

Anyway, the response of Grzegorz, Jur, Chris, and Thomas was really very impressive, so thanks to you guys!

And let's not forget that this is a free game and these guys do this out of the kindness of their hearts..... that and the fame and credit for their CV's ... *grin*

Some free games are down for months when there's a technical issue!

You should have added an ORDER BY clause to that... alphabet just happens to coincide somehow... :)

You mean you guys don't do drills? :)

It's always easier to deal with something after you've had some practice. I'd keep a dev box laying around to do practice on, particularly things like, 'Oops, someone left a trailing backslash and managed to WIPE the entire Names table with one misplaced SQL statement'. Been there, had it happen (despite the fact that we were actually checking for that in the hardcode), watched my code staff panic and restore from backups, lost about a week's worth because the backups hadn't been running due to full disk quota.
