Mandarin Chinese is the language, simplified or traditional the style of characters. There are two standards for Mandarin Chinese: 1) the one employed in PR China, which also means simplified characters and 2) the one employed in Taiwan, which also means traditional characters.
I think we should aim for simplified characters in Cantr because when you know traditional ones it's rather easy to read simplified ones but not the other way round. Also, there are much more people, both native and non-native, who employ simplified characters.
