Seko... I believe you dropped the f-bomb at least once.

@Farmer: The thing is, what I get from this at least, when someone is raped in this game it isn't: "*rapes the man*" It's something much more graphic and brutal. Whereas (I think someone pointed this out), if someone is starving or is hit: You see a man hurt a woman with a sabre, it's much less graphic and it is easy to block out or not even think about what would actually happening if it happened in real life (like the gore). Where when someone is RPing rape, they are bringing the image to your head when you read it, and it is very difficult to block out that image.

Yes, yes, that's what I was trying to say in some point. Rape is not the only thing that hurts. When your character is locked away unfairly from your perspective and restricted from human contact, given no chance to respond to the actions done to him / her, it is just as bad as raping some character without giving them a chance to respond. Says someone who couldn't sleep well and had nightmares and bouts of anxiety because of a character imprisoned.

Addition: And doesn't swearing mean using bad words to emphasize your meanings? If I say the f-work when talking about effing as in the literal meaning of performing intercourse, I don't think it's a swear, only a strong but informative word. However I edited it out and if you spot any more please tell me. Thank you.

I know, as west was saying, that violence and starvation are hard-coded into the game, and so different. I was talking about some player who 'kills a man in his twenties with a crossbow' and then RPs some kind of brutal, violent act. That's as unacceptable as a public description of rape, and shouldn't be tolerated, and, as far as it seems to me, is not.

If two characters/players actually happen to consent to a (private) RP of rape - there should be no censorship or banning. (although anyone doing that should be aware that private exchanges in Cantr are far from private). If someone then RPs the victim and perpetrator of that act, similar to someone RPing the victim/perpetrator of 'hurt a woman in her thirties with a saber' I was saying I'd probably Rp along with that. But, as with all RP, what you choose for your character to RP along with, and what to ignore, is a personal choice, and I think it should remain that.

I do want to add, however, that, if two consenting players do happen across each other - I'd prefer it if they realised that there are better arenas in which to RP it out than in Cantr.
Whoever you vote for.

starvation and violence are hard-coded and non-descriptive

*you are hungry*

*Aelric attacks you with a steel sabre. You lose 20 strength*

If rape was hard-coded (if it ever is, I will quit) it'd look like

*Johnny rapes you* presumably

There's a difference between violence and starvation, which are a result of the game mechanics and have to be part of any reasonably realistic society, and lurid RP'd rape. Neither sex nor rape have any in-game function. If someone chooses to hit someone with a sabre and emote

*he twirls his sabre and slices across Jim's chest, cutting him to the ribs*

that's fine as long as the mechanics of the game collaborate that and the damage is commensurate.

See my point?

When you hit somebody with a sabre on full strenght, they should logically be in shock and could easily be raped. Besides the physical damage from rape is minor, it is possible to rape someone without giving any physical scars. The biggests scars are to the person's mind, and such cannot be programmed in. We can code in intercourse, sexually transmitted disease and pregnancy, we can make it so that first time might hurt. Still we could not program in the anguish itself.

That's kind of the point. Because rape isn't programmed in (rightfully so), characters have to RP it, and, if done properly (or accurately I suppose), will be very graphic and brutal. The victim is forced to read all of this RP in order to respond well, and it can be very disturbing to the player to read.

Now, when someone is hit with a sabre, all you see is "A man hurts you with a sabre and you lose X% strength* There is no forced graphic image displayed here. If someone does want to visualize what might've happened here, then they have the right to do that, but as most of us do not want gorey or disturbing images in our heads, we do not visualize the actual actions that is being taken here.

I thought that both I and West had explained this... but here it is again.

Oh. Ok. I usually start any rp'd sex carefully, so there's a chance to retreat even if it meant getting physically damaged instead of having to read obscenities. If you run into a situation that seems like it could be something too stressful, OOC might be alright. It would be good if there was an ingame way of rp'ing refusal without looking like you're godmoding out of the situation. Like faint and might wake up feeling a bit sore but not remembering anything.

I'd be rather mad of seeing just "X rapes you" because that would be a short even and they might run out without giving you a chance to respond. I'd rather read the graphic description to know I'm dealing with an intelligent person rather than someone who's just clicking buttons. But then again I'm more hardened to seeing things.

the POINT is that rape is not a game function, nor should it ever be, and in any case when it's done it's disgusting, lurid, and obscene no matter what, whereas when someone is sabred whether there's any description of the attack is up to the players, but the HARD-CODED aspect is visible and non-negotiable.

We could always create a clothing item called a chastity belt and then paranid players can lock the belt and not have to worry about that particular area being violated.

it's not a question of being paranoid. It's a question of not wanting to deal with invasive, peurile and obscene "roleplaying". You want that, go do a vampire LARP or chatroom or something.

not in my backyard.

west wrote:A thought:

Cantr rape falls into two categories: That which is one-sided in the sense that one person "rapes" someone against the player's will, which is very bad RP, and that which is consensual between players but rape between characters.

It is very important that any sexual rp, no matter of what variety, is consensual between the players. It is okay to OOC, and actually is encouraged, to ensure that the other player is okay with it, is of age, etc. When in doubt, ask. Because if you don't, and the other person is offended, you can be darned sure the PD will be all over your patooty. (that statement would have had much more impact if I was allowed to swear :P )

It is also acceptable to email the players department to ask if the player is of age. No other information will be given out, other than a yes or a no.

All rp'd sex is to be whispered if there are other characters present. There is no excuse for any rp'd sex out loud, where it might offend others. Unless, I suppose, if you have three or more consensual players, shut away in a room, for example.

Any player who is playing Cantr just to rp sex, no matter what form, is not playing for the right reasons. I think we can all agree with that. However sexual relations do play an important part in some Cantr character's relationships, and I see no problem with that................as long as it's private, and consensual. This isn't sick, or people getting off on it (in my opinion). It is a natural part of most healthy adult lives, and thus natural in some characters lives.

As for rp'ing rape.........what I've said above goes quadruple! Consensual and private! And, my personal opinion is the same on this.........it isn't necessarily sick and perverted if it is something that has a strong basis for occurring for that character. *shrugs* I think Seko described a good instance of this.

I disagree with it being in private...
As previously stated, it would be stupid to see your wife "talking" a lot to someone right in front of you, when really they're making babies in the town square.
That's how I would like it to be IF sex was allowed.
But hey, I don't want sex in Cantr. It should be outlawed. Plenty of sex to be found on the internet, only one Cantr.

Regardless of opinion, it must be private, for very obvious reasons. If this were a sex game, then your point would be valid. But you are arguing for no sex, so that makes no sense.

It makes sense.
I believe it should be in private, but private as in in a building.
Not private as in "whispering". That's just stupid.

Nick's point is a good one. Plenty of places to go for sex and brushing up on your sex RP (do you really think people aren't getting off on it?), only one cantr.

In any case, the use of private whispers to convey events is not good. I don't think it's realistic at all...

...sex should be public, and non-existent.

In other words, out loud but only allowed in private. I'm tired of seeing a page and a half of "you see a man in his twenties talking to a woman in her twenties" and vice versa, and knowing they're RPing something in private that ordinarily would be glaringly obvious, and more than a little indecent.

GET A ROOM, if you must do it. Be realistic.

Sex is a natural part of peoples' lives, yes, as you say, but my girlfriend and I don't have sex in the hallways, out on the lawn, or in the middle of a classroom. That's what rooms are for. Exhibitionism is of course an option, but I doubt cantr folk would take to it any more kindly than IRL people do.

Actually, I think making sex "out loud" would make cantr MORE interesting, not less. People would actually have to be creative and realistic in choosing the setting for their RP escapades, or suffer the same social consequences as people in real life who have sex in public. Who knows, you get enough amenable people in an area, you can have a giant open-air orgy in the mountains, if that's what does it for you.

Incidentally, last few times any of my characters indulged in the carnal arts, as it were, they did it out loud, in locked rooms or boats or what-have-you. Much more interesting, much less lame. And just because I have occasionally been a culprit here doesn't mean I would shed a tear if it never happened again.
