One of my biggest pet peeves (and I'm well aware with as many as I've seen in game not everyone agrees with this, but...) The whole Mommy / Daddy / Brother / Sister / Aunt / Uncle / Cousin / grandmother thing in game really really really annoys me. These are oocly influenced and for goodness sake there are no "children" in cantr. Irritates me to no end when I run into a town and it's full of Mommy this and Daddy that. Soooo annoying.

There was a 21yo at my church with Down syndrome who acted like a child. I dunno where she is now, but if someone could pull that off in a character without being as annoying as Mitch is describing,....

I couldn't agree more. At least two of my characters have to put up with this crap. My oldest character does have something similar, but it's more of a maternal role than being an actual parent.

I wish there were more families in Cantr. It's fun to be a mom or a grandmother. Seriously. I even wish people could have actual children in Cantr, even though I know a lot of people hate that idea. So if there are a few childish characters and someone decides to take care of them, so what? If you don't like it, go to another town. Although you can't escape it on the radio, it's not like it was there all the time.

I like the idea because this would create a truly genuine society, with the culture of each town/territory/group inherited from generation to generation. It's really hard to convey any kind of cultural heritage to a newspawn man/woman in his/her 20 who first desire is to build a raker.
But in the other hand, I don't like it because born as a baby would ruin the freedom that makes of Cantr II what it is.
Anyway, I agree with Mitch79 and Xander. It's difficult for me to see a character as a child (physically); I tend to try to avoid this kind of rp, but I respect the people who wants to play it.

Babies could be NPCs and only become played by real people once they are old enough to actually do something.

This definitely puzzles me more than annoys me but then again I don't have a whole lot of experience with it yet, so perhaps the annoyance is looming.

The family thing sorta shocked me a bit, but it grew on me. Amy at Klojt does a great job rping it.
Players have a lot of freedom in the game. I don't see anything that says you can't do it nor basically force a new spawn to play along. If you want a family I don't see why you don't just announce hey we are expecting. The next newspawn will become their child. Take Lord Don and Lady Ravyn Macgregor for example. They come out of their house one day and say they are expecting. The next new spawn Lord Don says. Your name is So and So Macgregor I'm your father and this is your mother. The newspawn can either choose to play along, be deemed insane, or run away like half new spawns do anyway lol.

Excuse me? I don't know where you get your information from but The Macgregor child part is a complete lie. It's so ridiculously wrong it's funny. Besides, the name Macgregor is earned not given. I have no idea if you made this up or if you got it very wrong, but nothing even close to this happened.

Sorry, I was just using them as an example of how it could be rp'd if someone wanted to since they are probably one of the most well known couples in the game. Wasn't implying that's how they do it or even that they should do it. I just wanted to use someone as an example of how it could be done.

Since I had people ask me whether Lord Don and Lady Raven really did that, it wasn't clear that you made it up and it also wasn't clear to me. And I doubt that they're that well known a couple, but I get your point though next time it's a good idea to state more clearly that it didn't really happen.

I've never heard of them, nor have seen a real live MacGregor in close to 50 years. I thought they were as extinct as the dodo. :p
Anyway, the mommy/daddy thing does bug me, but the brother/sister thing does not. The Stone Knights, (in theory), are brothers and sisters. It's just a term to denote a level of commitment higher than friendship. My character and another started a family on Fu, with no one else around. We had maybe 8 newspawns to us, gave them our last name, and never once called them our children. They were just members of the family.

When people make a family in the brother/sister sense, that's fine. Some of the best groups to interact with have this going for them (MacGregors, Sidewinders, etc.). But when couples take others as their 'children', it gets strange, even by Cantr standards.

If there were real children and forced parental figures in the game, I wouldn't be playing anymore.
I've always seen the family dynamics and "children" as emotionally stunted adults. I see nothing wrong with that, and it's a good compromise for people who want to play younger characters.
