Yes and I'm unwilling to continue this conversation with you if you keep the demeaning attitude towards me and my opinion. I'm fine with discussion but I'm not fine with people being insulting towards me. The discussion will continue, but with people who wont demean me.

I have no idea why you're doing it or if you just hate me. But please, stop it. We're both adults here so you should at least be respectful of my opinion if you don't agree. If for some reason you have some personal beef with me for what ever reason then PM me and we'll squash it. Otherwise, I don't feel like I deserve to be disrespected on these forums by anyone. I've been nothing but polite with anyone I've talked with or at the very least tried to be respectful.

Hi JSWill! Welcome to the internet, you must be new here. :)

...seriously, this is the tamest and most civil board I've ever read or posted on. Most of the time that's a good thing but I have noticed it can lead to an almost laughable hypersensitivity and people quick to jump to the conclusion that any disagreement or the slightest bit of sarcasm equals being mocked, demeaned, disrespected, insulted, or whatever other hyperbolic term comes to mind at the time.

In a forum where it's against the rules to demean anyone or take a jab at people for risk of getting banned... Even sarcasm by all means is taking a jab at someone. So in my opinion, he is justified.

I guess I'm just not seeing where the terrible demeaning insult is hiding in anything he quoted?

Part of the reason this community is so priceless, though. Everyone is a fragile, fragile snowflake whose feelings must be protected at all costs...unless they get upset about their characters getting randomly, horribly murdered or tortured or whatever and then they're just huge crybabies who need to toughen up and get over it.

It's not just that post, Marian. EchoMan has consistently been rather demeaning to JsWill, which is pretty damn unprofessional for someone in GAB. Can you imagine Jos walking in here, for example, and shooting down everyone's ideas in a snarky way?

So I don't donate to Cantr because I am a poor college student who shouldn't even be on Cantr because I'm, for all practical purposes, double-majoring in two subjects with no overlap except in a few general education courses, and right now, four of my characters have severely piqued my interest and so now I'm going to play the game because CantrSpy just lit up. :D

Also, this game and the forum seem to be a fertile breeding ground for run-on sentences.

This sounds strikingly like my situation, except I don't use CantrSpy anymore because it doesn't work on Linux.
But I feel like I've gotten a lot out of Cantr, even career related experience, but I think that's because I also have put a lot into Cantr. It goes both ways. :)

With all due respect to you sir, and because I like Texas, I really do not see any particular "hate" as you called it.

Echoman quoted you, is that disrespect? Or is it that he finds the number 50 that you quoted a bit on the exorbitant side.
If it is true, and I have no reason to doubt you, you would be the best recruiter in the shortest amount of time in game history afaik.
For that I applaud you and we have no way to ask you for a list of these recruits because we do place a large amount of respect on the privacy of individuals who apply.
The same reasoning applies to why we do not discuss PD or other disciplinary cases on the forum.. its for the players.
When we have to investigate 1 or 2 players, its not a job we relish, its for the protection of the other 98.
But I diverge.

The length of roads really never bothered me in my 5+ years playing and I even had a char who 'traveled' across a huge expanse of the largest continent in game...on a wooden cart.

By looking at the wiki, we see that its an even slower speed than walking. The reason it was done was to make sure there was enough food and stone (to make fire pits) in the cart to make a few segments because sans maps, there was no guarantee that any source of food existed at any of the stops along the way. Yes, its slow paced... but I -did- have more than one char so I just played them whilst checking on my slooooow cart traveler.

The length of the roads can be annoying, but they do help in a few other scenarios I have participated in... such as chases. Its a major programming issue, I think and we may have to 'deal with it' yes, but then again, we are not waiting days for something to happen when some of us have 15 chars right? If we shorten the roads, should we narrow the oceans?
I don't know, its not my area of expertise and I am honest about that. Perhaps changing the ticks would help, but thats another fundamental change. I hope we can keep this honest and civil and truly do not see the level of intended disrespect to you that you (and a few others) seem to see. Maybe we can stop reading between the lines and let Echoman tell us what he meant or means... I know from experience that you are both well spoken individuals, so lets work this out.

Alladinsane, you went on a total tangent about how roads are fine for those of us with 15 players.

You do realise that JsWill's entire argument is pivoted around new players?

And are you that blind to sarcasm and snarkiness that you couldn't even pick up on it in EchoMan's post? I'll tell you something now - I am being demeaning and disrespectful right now to you. There's plenty of other ways I could have worded this. The style is very similar to EchoMan's way of talking, and if a GAB member can do it, I'll do it too. Okay?

It's not disrespect, it's just you are exorbitantly arguing the wrong thing on a false premise. :D

Let's play nice please and not argue about respect and length of roads (at least, not in this thread). :D

I also don't think this needs to be personal, and really it doesn't matter who's right or whether one side will get offended by evidence brought up.
As to the matter itself, I do think this is a valid concern, and support finding a solution. In another very different game (but it still works as a comparison), I noticed that the game makers after many years decided to make traveling much easier, even at no cost. I thought, well this is nice. What about how this affects the economy for those things previously bought for such travel? Won't this provide disincentive for acquiring the other methods of travel?
But I found that, it really doesn't matter. Being able to travel easier makes a game much more enjoyable for the players and less time wasted, and that's more important.
But at the same time I should watch what I say..Cantr is a game where game balance and realism is very important, as well as its slow paced nature. For example, speeding up roads could make thieves even harder to chase, but we could focus most or all of the speed improvement on walking, and we could make it so that you can return instantly to town when you click onto a path for whatever reason (especially new players) instead of having to wait another turn. I do think this is something on which we could improve.

PS This thread could be split into another thread about "Traveling and new players issues?" or something like that. Feel free to do it.

Why? I was just shining a mirror on yourself. You were defending a person who was being quite rude, saying that they weren't being rude.

But the moment I used that sort of language and wording and snarkiness on you, you recognised it.

Hm.

I totally support a thread split. Is it easier to make a new one and direct people there or just for a forum admin to do it? The topic of playerbase/roads has spread virally in almost every popular General Discussion post right now.

I have no objection to travel times either. I'm seeing so many opinions in this threads being stated as facts that are somehow assumed to apply to every player. (Not singling sherman out, this was just a good example.

It's really been frustratingtrying to follow both threafs and not being able to respond myself... Need a proper computer badly, ugh...

Oh, well I just based that on my own experience on game so far. Didn't say it's fact because well.. There's so many opinions as there is players
