In all fairness I don't think a definite decision should be taken straight away, I'd say an initial trial of a few weeks first, some fine tuning and another test if need be then permanent implementation or withdrawal. Though considering the sheer volume of whispers I think the percentage needs to go down in general.

Every single thing has its drawbacks.

normal? maybe. when your no where near them......no. not normal.

as for the whole drawback thing......well every action has an equal and opposite reaction i suppose, but randomly being overheard by someone seems like a crappy way to fail a plot.

and Wiro seriously a whsiper is a whisper not an obviously audible low tone that could be heard by people working on a noisy machine like a harvester.

granattacker i believe i said something about people getting annoyed when people start constantly passing notes

playerslayer666 wrote:Wiro, Seko, Rebma.....and anyone else who is for this. i am mainly against this cause whispering is WHISPERING. sadly, people use the whisper function for other things that are not whispers. but when you WHISPER should someone out in the cotton feilds be able to hear you regardless of what you are saying or perhaps doing? ( and FYI i am guilty of using the whisper function for sex but that isn't why i am against this cause i think just about everyone has done that )

i understand why this is being implemented, but not everyone uses the whisper function for sex in public. it could in theory put people's characters in a difficult position if they are plotting something. is that fair that they are overheard by someone who isn't even near them and they get locked up for plotting against the government? it's hard enough to find people to help you do " evil " things without the chance of being caught like that.

and come on if two people who are not lovers go inside a building to talk about something won't the town get suspicious? if they say it out loud won't others get annoyed if they don't care to hear about their idea to make an iron business? and what if they don't even have a house?

it works both ways. you don't want to hear about their pointless iron business that your not involved with and they don't want you to hear them talking about taking the entire town.

i guess what i am trying to say is stop acting like this is all about making people have sex inside and accept the fact that it can and will have it's drawbacks.

First of all, I never stated I was for it, at all, if you bothered to read anything :D. I can't help it that you don't have very solid points for not wanting it, and that it bothers me that you decide without taking in any facts or other opinions.

So yeah. Read. It's useful, like caesar said above, in developing opinions. If you managed to read that even.

How about if one of them is talking to you then suddenly breaks off to whisper to the other?

Then resumes your conversation?

Yes, but I hate them doing that already. If someone is standing right next to you you should be able to hear them anyways. But this is very hard to implement with the current game mechanics.

this has more to do with the possibility of a three way private conversation in public and nothing to do with overhearing people.

I thought the 'person is having two conversations at the same time'-thing.
And if I am in a three person conversation, I always simple whisper the same to both characters.
- Every person lost in war is two too many.
- Respect comes from two sides and must be earned. Nobody has the right to it because of a title, sex, age, race or birth.
- What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Do you see people in public whispering private conversations to each other? When you go to a mall does everyone sit in a corner whispering to each other? No.

If they want privacy they go into a room or outside or something to talk.

Wiro, I was under the impression that you were a long time player...
As long as I've been playing, when I chose to whisper to someone IG it was always only 'heard' by the person I whispered it to. So, yeah, it always has been
some sort of super secret no-one-but-the-one-the-whisper-is-intended-for message thing
up until now, of course.

I think a few weeks would be far too long. A couple of days, maybe, but anything over that would just be too irritating. I can tell you right now that a char of mine was overheard twice today, all its resulted in was the character who overheard it acting extremely out of character. So, that's what this function is doing, it's causing players to break out of character *shrugs*

Oh, and playerslayer, you are making quite possible the worst argument against this function possible. You argument is so weak and lame I am tempted to start arguing for the implementation.. Seriously, if you have no strong argument, let people who do voice them. You're just crowding up the place and being irritating. And, I am aware that is your goal, since you said so, but, seriously, you're just making yourself look bad and giving a weak argument and representation for those of us who have legitimate reasons against it.

Just an addition, how often do you see people in public speaking to each other, cupping their hands around the recipients ears? That's the only way to insure no one hears and makes you look like a fool.

Really people sit there whispering back and forth into another's ear? No they don't,

inorite?

EDIT: Ryaga, I agree completely. I don't whisper in public. I'll lower my voice, maybe, but i've had people hear me tons. And I've hear people tons who were trying to be quiet.

@Cn, Yeah, a few days, tops.

I wasn't refering to Cantr. I was refering to the RL definition of whispering.

Or, at least, talking quietly enough that they can't be overheard without deliberate eavesdropping.

@Caesar: You hit the nail on the head.

@Whisper/Note passing haters: How about if whispered conversations were condensed so all you saw was "John and Taylor whispered 24 times" or similar? Dragged notes? Passed objects? Though I'm guessing that would take some serious programming.

That's what we were trying to get implemented before a few high and mightys implemented this one with barely any discussion.

EDIT: Not that I mind whispers at all. I don't.

Agreed, this is one of the most ridiculous changes I have seen in this game yet.
