This is what I do. When I have a character spawned in a new area, I sort of research the area. I read whatever knows are around, what projects are being done.
So this is how I figure things out;
Either my character builds random tools and plays around with them until he finds a use for them.
Looks at other projects; if he sees that a someone is using a trowel to build a stone house then he knows that he can do that.
The only time I look something up is if I need a physical description of it. Such as sorghum. No one knew what the hell it was used for in Cantr City for a long time. So I looked it up and saw that it was grass similiar to wheat. Since my character in Cantr City already knew that wheat was for making bread, he came to the conclusion that the same could be done with sorghum. And eventually the people in Cantr City figured out how to make sorghum bread.
And then there is always what you can learn from notes or other characters.

Things like eating and talking I figured my characters learned during their childhood.
So whatever location my character is spawned in, I figure he automatically knows what things can be eaten and what cannot. Now if something comes from other places then he does not but he can learn by either picking it up and trying to eat it the next day or by someone else telling them.

I came into the world walking, talking and balking at every pitch of goodwill.

MysticGoten wrote:(Usually) when you begin a project, it says wot tools you will need. You don't have to look at other projects for that
Well, personally, I think that should be taken out. If my characters don't see the tool being used then he doesn't know what to use it for until he tries a project. If my character can't do something because he doesn't have the right tools then he keeps trying other tools.
It would make it easier for this type of roleplaying if it didn't tell you what you needed but there are some that thing it will make it to hard and frustrating for newbies and I guess I agree with them on that point.

Indeed it would be better if you knew as little as possible when you first begin and if as little info as possible is given.
But some information, like how much stuff you will need to make tools would be impossible to miss. (Like a hammer.. you would have to figure out days how much wood you would need, 1 gram at a time... )
But it would be fun if everybody try all the things out.

This is something I would like to see;
You don't know how something is built until....
1. You have enough materials to build it.
2. You see someone else already building one.
3. You see one made but that only tells you what materials are needed but not how much.
You don't know a use for something until....
1. You see someone else use it.
2. You experiment and find the right conclusion.
3. Someone tells you but you would need to actually do the action before you know thus would sort of be linked to #2 above.
I know this would be hard to program and some people think it will give an unfair disadvantage to experienced players when compared to newbies. But I still think this system would be better.

That would be better indeed, but I don't really offend to the system concerning building tools/buildings as it is now myself. I mean, that would make the game a bit to complicated for new players I think. Friends of mine already stopped playing this game when they were new cauz they didn't understand it. (I know... they r stupid but they remain my friends lol)
