Another idea for this tutorial island:
How about a second box on the events page, with a button called "Talk OOC", just below the 'talk to all' box? Producing text in a different color?
This way it could be emphasised that OOC talk is different than 'normal talk', all the learning and teaching characters could still rp despite a large amount of OOC talk going on, and it would be obvious for the newspawns that OOC talk is discouraged when they spawn a real character on real Cantr land and find out that the OOC talk button is not there.

I've sometimes been contemplating suggesting an OOC speech option to Cantr, but the problem is the times you most need is when someone is being a n00b and/or breaking CR, so you want to tell them that's not right - what if the person had turned receive OOC messages off? So everyone else would have to suffer.. provided that you said it in public.

Right now I'm dealing with a newbie that when I just tell him to try to RP and read the rules to be quickly engaged into the interface states "I haven't read the rules and I'm not going to do" and after that a lot of questions (most of them stupids, as "are we dividing our consciousness or everything belongs to the same thing?", or "are we in a bi or tridimensional space?" and replying himself "Actually we are not in a space, but a cyberspace").
I prefer to be playing alone than surrounded of stupid people that subscribes to a Role Playing game but don't want to roleplay or to read the rules of the game.
I swear it.
There must be some way of forcing the people to read the rules (the alternative is to read them from the other players via OOC chat)

I still like the idea of a tutorial island a lot, but not really all the added complications you guys propose
. Why do players need to make a transit to the real Cantr world? Why fixed tasks?
I would simply do it like this: every player can start one and only one character in the tutorial island; every new account will automatically have the first character spawn on the tutorial island; the PD can be more quickly than usual in removing (killing) players from the tutorial island on misbehaviour (no endless investigations are needed); and the one technical difference will be a special OOC talk form with the disclaimer as suggested by HF. That would suffice, right?
No need to have a different spawning system - the tutorial island will be very small anyway, like 4 locations or something; no need to have chars move from the tutorial island magically somewhere else, we need them to stick around and teach the next generation; no need for specific tasks, since Cantr is a totally open-ended game without fixed tasks, we don't want to give the wrong impression.
Oh, the only other special thing would be that sailing from non-tutorial to tutorial island or vice versa will be impossible. From one language island to the other could well be possible, though - why not? So I just imagine a separate map with as many small islands as we have languages, and each island about 4 locations, with at least some basic resources, and one of the four locations will have the ruins of a deserted village - so we will at some buildings/machines/tools/etc. before the first spawn.
And yeah, it could add to the 15 max nr of chars - one special slot for tutorial chars.

Ok but one thing to add, you can't be killed for the first ten days... no point having a tutorial island and being killed before you can learn anything..
Maybe they can be hurt down to 10% then a message ' This person is too weak to attack?' As you suggest with added PD scrutiny a protected period would be useful, perhaps only for newplayers??

I got sigged!
But yeah, I hope this is still going to happen, I can't wait for the newbie island. And I promise I'll be a benevolent ruler, once the conquering is done.
Actually I think besides teaching game mechanics this whole thing would a great opportunity to get new people to expect and get used to participating in good RP, instead of just tossing them into a random town that could be filled with sleepers.
I think the literacy laws I'll be enacting might help for that too. People who use chatsp33k or can't write a properly punctuated and capitalized note will be sent to the Reeducation Center, conveniently located right next to the Forced Labor Factory for Unrepentant Idiots. And the island is small so they CAN'T EVER ESCAPE. I wouldn't even really have to lock the doors, just make sure nobody builds boats without permission.
