I think it'd be fun and might create more team work if you start with no machinery, etc. I'd be curious to see how much can be developed in the span of 2-3 weeks it takes for Jos to fix the current database.

You know... I'm kinda on board with that idea too. I'm curious about how it would all work out.

If you used the current code, it would include the same vulnerabilities as it does now. A new database wouldn't help, it could be just repeated all over again.

True, but no one would have as much invested in their chars. It's traumatic now because of all the time and effort people have spent developing the chars that were killed or could potentially be killed. I doubt the hacker would have as much fun killing off a bunch of newspawns.

I can start again and again and again, how many times do you think they'll mess it up before getting bored?

There would also be complications with Jos owning the code and probably not wanting to make it publicly available. This could lead to someone else potentially get hold of it and finding vulnerabilities by reading the source code. What Seko said also holds true. I can see a few other problems that would occur by running a duplicate version of the site, such as long term members leaving for this new server.

That being said, I think a cantr world reboot with less landmass would be awesome. I miss the good ole days.

Armolus, it's actually a proven fact that security through obscurity does not work.

If the source code was released, things would be fixed ridiculously faster. I'm not saying that they should or anything, but really if they were out to get everything fixed and polished Cantr would do best being released with a 'free as in free speech' license like the GNU GPL, you could keep what little art and markup Cantr has under a no redist license and that'd significantly dissuade anyone from reusing Cantr as a base for their own deal. Would never happen, but if it did Cantr would be much more bug/exploiter free, not the opposite.

Has anyone here ever run an open source MUD/MUSH/MOO? Maybe someone could take an out-of-the-box app and make some Cantr-like modifications. Probably more trouble than it's worth, but it's a thought.

If it were released through some opensource repository for everyone to work on, ya it would. But handing it over to a limited group of people would fix nothing. If something like cantr was released under some license with a central repository, development would be much, much faster.

And it could attract many professionals from the open software to contribute and also the play the game.
Cantr II is a social simulator. What is not working is due a problem in the society.
Cantr is like Vegas - what happens in the game should be in the game.

Yea, a lot of these indie/homebrew games/mmos that go opensource get like all up over the open source blogosphere.

*sigh*

All my comments of wanting to see Dory nuked...and then this happens

I really do hope that this was the result of a fail hacker because as mentioned before, something like this would certainly be noticed and dealt with immediately, which means that a real hacker would know this, and that brings up a lot of interesting questions (if this was a 'real' hacker), namely, what are they diverting (as something like this could be an attempt to divert attention away from other happenings)?

The good news in all this though, Cantr isn't so big as to not be able to single out the individual(s) that were behind it. Even better is the fact that narrowing down the playerbase who have the known ability to do something like this makes that job even easier. (another reason to believe this is a fail hacker).

For those going through Cantr withdrawals, here are some suggestions:

Get those descriptions done! Open up wordpad (or similar) and start writing, get em ready for when Cantr comes back to us.
Write up some ideas for the webzine, seeing new stuff is always nice!
If all else fails, for those really addicted...lots of alcohol and sedatives! When you awaken from that self imposed coma, Cantr just may be waiting for ya :D

I'm way ahead of you on the alcohol front.

My times being spent doing my character images. I'm in the process of getting every proffesional 3d software program I can get my hands on. I will find one I can work out how to use!
