Maybe rather than entirely prevent people from doing things, skill below efficient gives a chance that no product will be produced at the end of the project (or for more continuous products that only a small fraction will) while skill above gives a chance that a fraction of the input will be returned with the product?

Yeah, if we prevented it altogether we might get mass newspawn suicides as people find themselves awkward in skills they want to be expert at. Still, it might be worth it?
Ahh, dangerously close to having to split this. Back on topic:
Thing that annoys...everyone seems to do the most wonderful/awful/interesting things when I am at work, sleeping, or otherwise unable to respond. *shakes fist* Curse you Cantr time!

I find it annoying when criminals coordinate events on an international public holiday knowing full well most players are afk

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
I remember when the skill discussion first came up, IIRC I was in support of it then, but I'm not sure how much impact it would have now besides enraging people whose characters have always done what they suddenly can't do and causing meltdowns here on the forum. Like Wiro said, butter all over again.
And I'm not too in favor anymore of changes that will punish a character based on the whims of the RNG. The skill and spawning system can already produce some pretty crippling combinations as it is.
Either way, only a few skills would make more sense as needing someone that's a 'master' at it...tool and weapon smithing, manufacturing machines, vehicles, ships, cooking? What else? Cooking is one that makes sense from a realism standpoint, but it may not be a good fit with the others since in the actual game there's no incentive to make the more complicated dishes whatsoever outside of RP. (which is a thing that annoys me, just to stay on topic...)

When people can't let go of an IG situation. (I get annoyed at myself for this.) Or when someone posts about events before the 4-day-rule.

Re: Things that annoy or puzzle you about Cantr
The amount of deaths again.. Seen past 10 days again maybe 8 deaths. Most are newspawns who never say anything after spawning but some have been new players that suddenly quit, or old ones. It's really sad even when you don't know them cause... Already spread out population will be even more so. It makes me wonder what they want but don't find on our game..
Maybe spawning system should be fixed asap so that new players spawn on lively towns? But that can't be only problem? Something deeper must be with all the sleepers

I also noticed less activity in game this week. Maybe Christmas & New Year pause makes people rethink their game participation?
I think ...

Might be might be. There's been really sharp decrease on activity on couple last weeks and these deaths go along with that. It's just makes me think reasons for it. I know it's community game where people around you make an impact and I would probably quit too if I were new and found very few activity while I have time to play. But is there something deeper fault on game? I mean mechanics or so cause those you can fix easily but fault with community not so easy

There's always been more sleepers than wakeful chars, it's really not anything new. It doesn't even necessarily mean the player isn't playing, they're just playing other chars since they're long past the point where they would have had heart attacks if they hadn't logged in at all. There are some near mine who have been sleeping for months. I think lots of people have characters on their list they just ignore, especially if they made all 15 and got overwhelmed.
The holidays might be a factor as well. I know it's happened to me before. You spend enough time away from Cantr, it's hard to get back into your characters' heads at first, and you start to resent that three hour leash after having had another taste of what it's like being away from it.

Well, you're thinking too much like veterans - my friend who played, she was actually overwhelmed by the wall of text she would be greeted with whenever she woke up, while trying to figure out mechanics and RP at the same time. It eventually started to feel like a burden, so she quit before she really got started.
Maybe what new players need is quiet towns.

It's good to hear reason why someone quit really. And that's true, I always quickly check chars and read logs later.

The 'can play just 15 minutes a day' thing is such a lie.

I talked to a new player awhile back because I'm curious too what sort of impression the game gives now, the internet being a very different place from when I started. They had the whole RP thing down from the beginning and only needed a little help with the mechanics, but they've let their account time out since then. The last thing I heard was that they were busy with classes and kids IRL, and while they loved the game they had fallen into that trap of making 15 chars right away and then got to the point they were spending hours a day just trying to keep up. Their intention had been just to take a break afaik, but of course once you stop playing awhile and go through detox there's no pressing urge to come back.
I've seen so many newspawns start out with a splash and then wither away, I wonder whether new accounts shouldn't be more limited in the number of chars they can have. Like, five for the first 40 days until they can see for themselves how much of a time investment the game takes and get a more realistic idea of how many chars they can handle once they all start getting more involved in their communities. I've been in the same situation before of having to drop an account because it was just too much and that huge list of white names became too daunting with so much going on IRL at the same time. I've found a good balance now that I'm happy with but it took a lot of trial and error because for awhile there I was addicted to making new chars.
It helps too that I can just check my chars on my phone now, so even when I don't have time to RP I can keep up with what's happening and avoid having to tackle those walls of text once I sit down to play.

I had my account locked at four characters very early on and I think that's part of what kept things manageable for me for a long time XD I really can't imagine having 15 characters, it sounds like a nightmare.

Part of that is not having 15 interesting, engaging, unique, characters. Some are sleepers, some are the sidekick (they just RP off of someone else's RP) and almost at all times I'm constantly culling someone. Turnover is high for the characters that dont work out, but I've discovered some RP avenues that are fun that I otherwise never would have expected.
I guess the big hanging block for people is that they feel guilty/bad for killing of characters when they get bored with them - - if their personality didn't develop enough or I'm just bored, I just turn on all the filters and fill up their arms (and since they rarely have a story to start with, there's not anyone missing keys or anything).
Of course, I've always been in favor of shunning real life in favor of my current book/game/show so, maybe I'm not the person to ask.
