This is usually the case, yes. I find long time players who consistently refuse to use capital letters and punctuation a lot more annoying (confusing too since your phone does if for you, half the time...), but it's not worth making an issue of. But people using a smiley face instead of *smiles* or not being able to tell the difference between acceptable and unacceptable uses of OOC simply don't know any better, and there's nothing wrong with a polite whisper, and that certainly doesn't equal elitism or any kind of personal attack.

And of course, my character has no idea what to make of someone saying 'colon, right parenthesis', so I'd just treat it as a typo and have them ignore it.

Auto correct goof ups, I'm pretty sure everybody understands and ignores. It's only when the person goes back and corrects themselves OOC instead of just rolling with it or saying they misspoke that it bugs me.

edit:

And sorry but I have to respond to this:

Claiming that people are lesser rpers because they have a different style is disruptive and hurtful.

No one in this thread has said or even implied anything about people being 'lesser RPers' except you and Estaar. Please stop putting words in people's mouth, because that's the kind of thing that leads to things getting out of hand, and me earlier post was entirely in response to that.

SheDevil just said she thought it was annoying. Here, in the 'things that annoy you' thread. It was a perfectly valid opinion and not meant or expressed in any kind of rude way. There was no reason for her to be attacked for that or implications made that she was some kind of elitist trying to chase people from the game.

They might be a genuinely new player and not realize. And if someone uses chatspeak, smilies, poor typing, poor punctuation, poor grammar, poor spelling... so what? Breaking immersion? There are people who are bad at typing through no fault of their own due to some disorder or another, or people who are using text-to-speech, and I've seen plenty of phone auto-miscorrects. So long as they're making a good faith attempt to play, there's no need to get on their case about it.

This.

That shit doesn't tend to bother me. There was a player in haven area who used smilies and it just fit the whole situation. * : D * Not worth pissing your panties over.

What annoys me is this type of playing

Person: *requests clothing from tailor, custom*
Tailor: *makes clothing for free*
Person: Oh, that's not quite how I'd like.
Tailor: Oh sorry let me make it right for you! It's my bad, I want to make sure you love it.
Person: No, nevermind, I can sew, I'll fix it myself later.

Come on. :(

I don't like chatspeak either, but I either politely ask them OOC not to do it or ignore them. If they keep doing it, I just don't play with them. Honestly, I think this comes back to the issue of people playing this game for different reasons and with different priorities. I recall our conversation about RL references and feel like I don't have a lot of ground to judge someone for using "btw" when I think a town called Texas is funny.

When I see that my chars will usually say something in response like: "What was that? You coughed or mumbled and I couldn't understand what you just said."

Personally I don't like this way of handling it. I find drawing attention to it like that to be disruptive, and it reads as passive-aggressive to me. Ditto to the whole "*blank look* What's a Texas?" thing when people reference OOC concepts IC.

Emotes are a more interesting question. I don't really see a difference between *smiles* and :) myself besides convention. I've known a couple of characters who used emotes regularly, and I thought it was fine. It's just a matter of what people are accustomed to. I mean, when I first started playing, I thought the *emote* thing was really weird and tacky and impossible to take seriously, but I'm used to it now.

Now, that was mean, Marian. The player is probably not a native speaker then. This kind of mistakes can happen, and I believe that most of non native speakers would really appreciate if you just OOCed them and corrected their mistake instead of making fun of them on the forum.

No, that's the game's actual message for getting on a steed.

Wow, seriously? I didn't know that. I take it back then, sorry.

Holy crap this blew way out of proportion. But thank you, to those of you who have now made me feel like crud for a simple rant. Thought that's what this whole thread was about. Things that annoy or puzzle you.

*thumbs up* for attitudes I've seen here.
Oh look, another glorious morning… makes me SICK!

I've got one. I'm quite puzzled as to why people in game and out take it upon themselves to read things differently than how they actually are said. Fun times, trying to make them understand. XP

I have a char in another char's town and the situation would make the first so angry that I'm not sure if I want to bring it back... And there is this situation with a third that could be helped so much and so easily by another one... Sometimes the capital rule is so annoying...

Brown nosers, gold diggers, and their targets. Usually leaders that have been drinking their own kool-aid so long they're not capable of seeing through even the most transparent manipulation attempts.
