I fully approve of the exploitation of the lazy. I mean as long as they're not taking deliberate measures to keep people from traveling...

The thing is, this mysterious unknown town actually has wood in stock. Who said there was a reason for that mysterious unknown price?

I really hate when people use abbreviations in chat. Like "BTW" or "omg" Like really, this isn't a chat program you use with your friends...

When I see that my chars will usually say something in response like: "What was that? You coughed or mumbled and I couldn't understand what you just said."

Usually they're new to the game and they genuinely don't know it looks weird to everyone else.

Not always, but yes. If there are telltale signs that it's a new player then I will give them an ooc with the link to the wiki's getting started page. But my char will still react to how it would sound and not know they mean "by the way" instead of sneezing.

I generally just don't respond. Makes me feel bad sort of but I really have little to no patience when I play anymore because I'm at work. Usually get enough annoying things going on there to bother with them in the game.

Maybe the people using such abbreviations are playing from work with their mind elsewhere. A mistake like 'btw' might slip out in that case.

Of course, they /could/ always decide to become sleepers, if they don't have enough time to play according to your high standards ...

This. I wonder how many players come on the forums, see their rp style mentioned specifically in this thread and stop playing. I think the player of a character mentioned by name has been very quiet lately because of that. This thread is starting to go the way of the old Rant thread.

You win the award for most passive aggressive post on the forum in recent memory, congrats! Image

Also lol at both of you and 'not using chatspeak while RPing' being considered some kind of unreasonably high standard now.

I keep seeing people (or maybe just a couple of people, over and over...) with this attitude, and it never makes any sense at all because this is an emotionally demanding game and not one aimed at fragile snowflakes. If someone is really so emotionally unstable they would cry and leave over a forum post, then they'd leave and need some kind of intense therapy over the things that happen in this game on any given day. Or the internet in general. Not to mention real life.

Basically, I'd find it impossible to believe they'd ever reached the age where they could have a job to pay for their internet and sign up for a game like Cantr without killing themselves long before because somebody said something rude to them in a grocery store once.

It's a cooperative game, not a competitive one. What doesn't fit is exactly this sort of hostile, trolling attitude in the forum.

Phones have changed how people type. It might be disruptive, but everyone who tries to RP should feel welcome.

So disliking or disagreeing with a thing, or even just thinking something is silly and saying so is automatically both 'hostile' and 'trolling'?

Of course, they /could/ always decide to become sleepers, if they don't have enough time to play according to your high standards ...

This post aimed at Shedevil didn't have a hostile tone? What was so horrible about her original post that it deserved a response like that instead of a simple disagreement?

People have every right to be annoyed by chat speak. It's as disruptive and OOC as people flinging about a bunch of public OOC messages about trivial things. A polite OOC whisper about it if it gets out of hand, and a bit of mild complaining in the thread created and designed for that does not by any stretch of the imagination equal trying to drive people out of the game because ugh, they're just not good enough RPers to meet our standards.

Most often the case is what SumBum said, that they just don't know any better. And they'll never get a chance to, if nobody says anything.

I've seen people who use smilies and chatspeak, even mixed up OOC inadvertently. Generally I just gently give them a whisper about it. They might be a genuinely new player and not realize. And if someone uses chatspeak, smilies, poor typing, poor punctuation, poor grammar, poor spelling... so what? Breaking immersion? There are people who are bad at typing through no fault of their own due to some disorder or another, or people who are using text-to-speech, and I've seen plenty of phone auto-miscorrects. So long as they're making a good faith attempt to play, there's no need to get on their case about it.

This discussion is going to quickly get out of hand because it always does, but it still needs to be said. This kind of personal attack is bad for the game. You can blame the people getting upset all day, but that doesn't lessen the damage done. People are still responsible for their words and the impact it has on others. Claiming that people are lesser rpers because they have a different style is disruptive and hurtful.

This game has a HUGE learning curve. We've all gone through it. Ranting about it on here doesn't fix anything. Patience is important in a slow paced game such at this. I'd get frustrated if someone constantly pointed out my flaws. I only play from a mobile phone, so there are some strange things that pop up because of this. I appreciate those who have been patient with me, so I would like to pay forward that level of understanding and consideration.
