Pepsi is much better, actually. But, I feel the topic has totally veered away from Cantr now, so...

Coke used to be a much more general term down here, but soda it what most people use now. It still has its place as a general term, though. For example a lot of people will use the term "coke machine" to describe a soda vending machine regardless of the type of soda it dispenses.

Snickie wrote:Soda is a general term for a type of beverage (soft drinks, carbonated drinks, etc.). Coke is a specific beverage. This is important because Coke is not Pepsi and Coke is better than Pepsi. Pop is a genre of music that I hear way too much of on the radio. It's also incredibly fun to do with bubble wrap.
Here in the South, if you go to a restaurant and order a coke, hearing "What kind?" "Dr. Pepper." Is not uncommon.

Right
So something that I guess doesn't really annoy me so much as disappoint me, and this kind of goes back to what we were talking about earlier, is okay-- So everyone's seen Mad Max, yeah? And Max may have been the MC but Furioso stole the damn show. She would be -exceedingly- great to play as a character (with some tweaks, obvs) but what's strange is that I can play Furiosa almost exactly as long as I don't -call- her Furiosa. Despite the fact that it would be her either way, you know what I mean? People would consider it bad form just because I didn't make the cookies from scratch, I used a recipe, that happened to be name brand. And even if the char wasn't like her (which would be a damned waste if you ask me), people would still get their hackles raised at the name, which is, I think, silly.
And I don't mean this just with Furiosa of course, but I read a lot and play a lot of video games and a lot of times I like to see what it would be like if those chars were involved in the world of Cantr.

Actually I'd have no problem with the name, it's the 'playing a character that was just like her' that would bug me. Unless you can arrange to have your char kidnapped at a young age, raised in a society like the one in the movie, rise up in the ranks despite it all and then decide to rebel and help people escape....you can't play a character like Furiosa. Characters spawning with some complex predetermined personality that has nothing to do with where they are or the people around them or anything that's ever happened to them is a pet peeve of mine.

It's kind of a grey area, true. If you spawned a char with the backstory of Furiosa, that would be against the rules; regardless of its name. Some may look on it as poor form but you could spawn a char with the name AND personality of that real world referenced character (minus the background) - that may or may not go over well with PD. I'd say it's definitely commonplace for characters' personalities to be based off a real world reference but name changed so that it's not quite so obvious. In my opinion, that's the best route to go.* It allows a player to have -that- character in the Cantr world but it won't cause other players to immediately assume their personality as soon as they hear the name. I think that's the strongest argument against using obvious real world referenced names - it could be considered along the same lines as putting personality info in the description field or thoughts in emotes.
Cantr world is full of chars whose names were obviously taken from real world, throughout its history (wasn't there a famous map maker during early years who was named after a famous philosopher?). Sometimes it's obvious even without the full name (several Aryas in game now too, but thankfully I've not come across an Arya Stark). I think many players just roll their eyes at it.
* On a side note, it really helps me sometimes if I have a real world reference for a char, especially the ones whose personality differs so much from mine. If I base a char's personality on something real world, like a character in a TV show, then when I'm having trouble getting into that char's mind I watch a few episodes of the show to get me in character. I see it no different than actors finding a muse to model their role after or immersing themselves to get into a role.

You've got a point. I say I wouldn't mind the name Furiosa, but maybe that's just because I like the name and at the same time don't think it stands out too much. I guess it's probable direct references to things have different effects on different players depending on their opinion of the source. A town called Texas is far less stupid to me than San d'Oria, even if that may be completely subjective.
For instance, I've run across a character named Acheron Parthenopaeus. And he seems to want so hard to be taken seriously, but I just can't.
I mean:
Ash is usually seen as a very calm and reserved individual, rarely revealing any personal details about himself and needing to keep his emotions in check. He doesn't like his hair being pulled or people breathing down his neck, as it reminds him of his time as a whore. He is considered a poster child for the goth movement and has a vast collection of guitars.

It didn't effect my character's behavior, of course, and no offense to the player because I'm sure it seemed like a good idea at the time, but I couldn't really enjoy RPing around him and got away as quickly as possible because, again, how can you take that seriously? It's like if you ran across a char named Edward Cullen or something.

For me it's Texas that crosses the line whereas San D'Oria I don't care... probably because I didn't even know lol. Also thanks for ruining the Acheron dude for me as well. You're just one big party, aren't you?

When I see unusual names like that I google them, it's compulsive. Sometimes it's a random mishmash of fantasy syllables, but a lot of times they're a deliberate reference. It's just that I was expecting some Greek mythology thing, not...what I got.

Yes! Oh my god I do this hard although I tend to do it more often with mythological characters of various cultures than pop culture, although I find myself sometimes binging on a show or book right as I have a character developing, and end up with that character going in a way different direction than I intended. I'm watching AHS: Coven right now and doing my damndest to make sure one of my chars doesn't turn into Marie Laveau.
But it's always how I develop my chars, I guess, that makes a difference. I find spawning with a set goal or objective does not tend to work well. But sometime's it's hard, because you spawn and people immediately demand to know your name, but A) I choose my name based on the personality I intend to give my character (which I decide after I spawn), and this often goes fairly in depth, and B) My response also needs to be consistent with their future personality.
Characters who shriek at my newspawns tend to get violence or extreme rudeness.

The radio effect. Someone says something and suddenly the whole world remembers that they, too, have a voice. I'm not even talking about radio drama, but genuine radio messages that people want to broadcast and are reminded of because someone else speaks on the radio. Give others a chance, will you?

I used the name of a sushi restaurant (and an idiosyncrasy of a chef my parents knew there years back) for one of my characters.
Oooooo now I want to see a "how your characters got their names" thread.
I had two that were named with reference, at least in their names, to outside media. One was the name of a group of bad guy NPC mooks in a game. The other was a character on a TV show that only appeared in one episode of the whole series.

Any character that is perpetually doing one or all, or any combination of the following:
-Simpering
-Whining
-Sniffling
-Sniveling
-Crying
-Having a tantrum
Do the world a favor and put a burlap sack over your head so that you are at least amusing while doing these.

Yes! Goodness please. It annoys characters but it also annoys me as a player because it's like "Oh my char's lit u--oh it's just so-and-so 'sniffles' or 'hides head'-ing again.". So my choice is ignore them or make sure I don't miss anything and be whined to death.
I wish they had a mute button for specific chars.

I would like to add brooding to that list, which is to say the male version.
I hate seeing 20 emotes in a row of someone doing something while silently brooding. I really don't give a shit, dude.

That's racist against against those of us with perpetual allergies and hay fever! Now I have to get all whiny and throw a tantrum and then go silently brood noisily for the next seven hours!
