Didn't Piers Anthony invade and level Cantr City and several other of the surrounding towns? There is nothing like that happening in the game today, and although I don't know for sure, I think it results from a lot of the programming changes -- locks and attacking and weapons and what have you -- making that kind of thing harder.
Most programming changes, especially violence-related ones, were reactionary changes designed to eliminate or stall events like this--huge massacres, large stockpiles of arms, etc.
In the old days two people with war bows could destroy a town like Krif in just eight turns.
Enter town. Both people shoot everyone. War bows did 35 damage to unshielded people (and in plces like Krif that was almost everyone). In those days weapons never missed and did the same amount of damage regardless of who wielded and who was blocking.
Both people leave. The next day they return and finish the job.
Nowadays, you'd need at least ten people to massacre a town. From variable weapon skills to chances of missing completely to tiredness, it's harder and harder to kill multiple people. Alas for the good old days
