I view "age 20" as merely a way to say that we are spawned as physically developed human beings. Not necessarily what you know or anything, though obviously we should know basic things.
Just because you're older, smarter, stronger, more talented... doesn't mean you're BETTER.

Okay, don't ever, ever put words in my mouth. I say plenty, hell I rant plenty, so if you are going to accuse me of things, make sure it is things I have actually said.
saztronic wrote:With all due respect, skills have nothing to do with bad roleplaying. Newspawn comments about the size of a town, or needing a shovel, are not skill-related, it's just bad RP. Slapping oneself or saying "I'm an expert onion farmer" obviously reference skills, but a comment like "I can't wait to get a crossbow" or "I need a sloop so I can go to XXX to gather salt" or somesuch thing would be just as bad, and would have nothing to do with skills.
What I said was in direct response to the example Wichita gave. In that example, all the problems he was complaining about are the direct result of skills, or more the skills system we have. If you don't see that then tough luck.

Now to take a leaf from your book... In other words, Saztronic is trying to say bad RP is all just one big issue. That just isn't true. There are a whole myriad of ways to RP badly and I am fully aware of that, and of many of those ways. The example given, and the post to which I responded, is an example of the skill related bad RP. Someone spawning and asking for a sloop or a crossbow is ooc-knowledge related bad RP, a totally different issue which bears absolutely no relation to what I said or the point I was trying to make.

saztronic wrote:Many people have charries who choose professions, not based on their skill at it, but because it's IC for them.
This is one of the points raised against skills, in relation to the way Cantr used to be. I preferred it when a char would choose a professions based on legitimate IC reasons, and IC needs, not the way it currently is, where you are lucky to possess the necessary skills to do many things (and being unskilled makes life extremely difficult) and effectively you either do what the programming tells you, which I find wrong on many different levels, or you ignore it which makes the programming just an unnecessary obstacle to playing the game.
saztronic wrote:It's hard to take what you say seriously when it's clear that your comments are all-too-often distorted by this "skills" prism. And that's too bad, becasue there may be (I think there are) good reasons why skills don't make sense or should be changed; but the existence of bad RP isn't one of those reasons.
Well, I am disappointed you feel that way, but I think you might be able to tell I won't be taking anything you say seriously ever again. I do find it interesting that you form this entire opinion based on one comment (and maybe a few of my posts, I don't know) as I rarely post much on the forum now. It's pretty pointless to do so in my opinion... it just leads to these kinds of posts. If you want a detailed argument against skills, go dig up a skills thread. I don't think it's surprising that I don't outline my entire argument against skills in every post, especially when they are irrelevant to the point.

I couldn't have made the point much better myself, which is funny, because I tried to; it was the entire thrust of my response to your first post. Skills aren't really relevant to the subject matter of this thread. Just to review, what actually is the subject matter of this thread?

wichita wrote:Has RP sunk so low? Is there no way to more creatively introduce a new character into the world and, by some weak glimmer of hope, actually pretend at all that the character was not spawned with the firggin wiki in his hands?

Ah, yes. I remember now. The thread is about bad RP. Specifically, players who play newspawns as if they've been alive for two decades. That's what the thread is about.

That's why it was weird -- even jarring -- to come across this post:

The Surly Cantrian wrote:This is an inevitable result of the skills system we have.

*shrugs*

If we didn't want this, we shouldn't have skills... and surprise surprise, I don't want skills.

Not only does your post have little to do with the subject of this thread, it also doesn't relate to any of the posts that precede it. You were so focused on an example that happened to involve one of your pet peeves that you missed the entire thrust of the conversation. As Winston Churchill once said, "A fanatic is one who can't change his mind and won't change the subject."

The Surly Cantrian wrote:If you want a detailed argument against skills, go dig up a skills thread.

Exactly my point.

The Surly Cantrian wrote:I think you might be able to tell I won't be taking anything you say seriously ever again.

Well, that's a frightening future I'll just have to force myself to contemplate, but I think I can manage.

I like Surly. :P

No one is going to argue against my post? *shrugs* Oh well.

I haev a feeling you guys are arguing just because you don't like each other and not completely because you don't agree with them.

By the way, with the credit system I have a feeling there's going to be a lot more intelligent 20 year olds.

Actually, for the record, I like Surly too, surliness and all. I didn't think my original post had all that much in it to set him off, but obviously I was way off on that one.

The interface for cantr uses the words awkward, novice, efficient, skillful, expert, etc...

What other terms would you have a newspawn use? Cantrians interact with their universe through the game mechanism, so if a player chose to farm onions he would immediately see that he can gather more with a tool.

You would perhaps prefer some form of contrived ignorance:

"Mmmm its a bit hard farming onions... Hmm I wonder if one could make a kind of digging implment, maybe I will call it a shovel?"

We've had the discussion about the fact that newspawns have innate knowledge, this seems like an excuse to whinge about someone who doesn't RP like you want it done!

Bingo.

A Cantrian only has so much he can observe on his first day. He doesn't have a town to explore, really, but he can interact with the resources on the location, read the notes, etc.

Some people are going to power-play. As long as they're not breaking the capital rule, which this person does not appear to be doing, then it's fine. And I don't really see how that's "bad" rp. If he consistently acts like this, I'd call it good RP.
