cow is female, male is bull
'beef' and 'milk' cows are both normally female - very few bulls are kept alive - you only need about one per twenty odd cows to make sure they're all pregnant and producing milk...
Because the cows have to be pregnant to produce milk - they're are loads of unwanted male calfs - useless, as they don't need that many as future bulls - they don't produce milk, and they're not worth keeping for beef meat, as there's more than enough from dairy cows...
As a result - very large numbers of male calfs are just killed... They're seen as useless - especially in countries, such as the UK, where veal as meat is not commonly eaten...
So - if you drink milk - even if you're a vegetarian - it's resulting in the death of thousands of unwanted male calfs...
Unfortunately, the other option - being kept alive for veal meat - is even more horrible, as they are often intensively reared in awgul conditions
anyway - sorry - that was a rant and far off topic - please ignore...

Well, it's not like the females have it much better. Being kept alive to produce milk also means a horrible existence, at least in the larger operations or "factory farms". (And don't even get me started on the way chickens are forced to live...)
Of course, we do keep cattle and chickens to sell, and a lot of my friends and relatives hunt, so it's not like I'm all touchy-feely when it comes to killing animals or anything, (though it's still not something I would personally want to do) but at least our animals get to live outdoors and have some semblance of a natural life.
I don't really consider myself a "vegan" or anything, and most of the time the PETA people just piss me off, but I don't eat meat or dairy products, and I don't buy eggs from a store. That's not just because of sentimentality, either; if more people could see the kind of environment their meat was packaged in, or how many growth hormones and antibiotics and every other kind of drug were injected into these animals, I think most of us would think twice before putting that stuff anywhere near our mouths, if only for health reasons...
