This is a clear misconception between you and you characters, and thus OOC. Please reconsider. :)

If your character is a killer what would be the IC reason for keeping your victim around? I'm not going to go through the trouble of isolating someone, knocking them out and taking their things only to leave the risk of them surviving somehow and rolling up twenty years later for revenge after I've forgotten all about them.

Or course things might be different if you're playing a town guard or something, but if a prisoner is refusing to cooperate to the point where hey have to be stabbed within an inch of their life just to make them drop whatever they stole there's probably not much reason to keep them around or waste time healing them.

The NDS state doesn't mean you are supposed to let them live. You can still kill everyone you feel like. The point is: you get 3 full days of roleplaying said death with the other player, so he doesn't feel like he played that 100 years old character for nothing. Let the other players have some closure.

What if it's a person you want to make a slave? A wakeful person learns you keep slaves then flees, you chase him down put in near death state but can't get to him to put him in the slave quarters. So do you still have to kill him to get him off the wooden cart or whatever, or can he be removed in NDS?

Oh, I don't know anything about that, I don't have as many violent characters as I wished. Anyway, isn't there a sort of test realm where the ProgD can try these things out? I thought we had something like that.

Yeah, they have a test environment where they test out new additions before they go live. Don't know if they tested for that in particular though.

The test environment is fairly inconvenient to work in and you can't think to test every possible situation.

If someone enters near-death state, does the player get an email then or only if the character has actually died? Just wondering because if it's the former, it might be a valid way to wake up sleepers.

There is no email as of yet, but that's an excellent topic for the suggestion forum. :)

I have gathered the information from this topic and created a wiki page here: http://wiki.cantr.net/index.php/Near_death_state

Does anyone who wants to kill a character actually use this?

I have a ritual murderer. He studies and chooses his victims carefully, according to some patterns. Then he has to do some kind of religious ritual with his victims. This was so difficult first, obviously he has to kill the character to avoid they run away, and then makes the ritual. But this ritual, because of its specifications, has more sense if the victim is in a NDS. So yes, I use it; and I'm very happy with it, because at least, his victims could see the details of the personality of their murderer, and maybe they could understand better the reasons of their deaths. (I used to RP it alone, after the other characters death  )

Ah.
Very cool.
It's all worth it then, however rare it is.
I wish you had been my character's murderer instead :)

I've seen it used in "normal" murders, too, but I've also seen people killed without using it. If I would murder any char I'd use it (because it sucks so much for the other char if it's not used)
Don't remember where I was - I realized life was a game - The more seriously I took things - The harder the rules became

I would like to thank God for players like you, and the murderers you've witnessed use it.
Just knowing you're out there warms my heart as much as if I'd actually gotten to respond before being finished off.
