In response to Snickie's query about my double-posting (and you say "again", so I assume it's happened elsewhere tonight?), yeah, my computer is flaking out today, especially in regards to Cantr and I've probably hit refresh in places where I shouldn't've My apologies to all. (but, gee, it certainly does bring home the fact that ability for people to delete their own posts would be nice, doesn't it?)

It's been abused in the past, and won't be happening. If you want a post deleted, that's what the moderators are for.

@ people that think it's an abuse of power - It's in my rights to delete double posts. A reply with a complete quote of the previous post is, imo, a double post. There ARE players out there that use a text reader to read these forums. At one time, there were actually two! Do I know if they're still reading? No, I don't. However, my point still stands.

I tend to agree with Doug. Not that we should delete posts, but rather that we should educate our forum users that quoting 12 nested posts isn't really helpful or necessary most of the time. I know I quote a lot, but I try to cut out everything irrelevant to my reply.

@Snick & gejyspa - it took me about 2 mins to moderate this thread. It's really not that big of a time-sink, and it's my time. (is now really grumpy).

@GAB - we can put it in the terms of use that such behavior is considered content spamming. That would solve the issue. Consider that the search function needs to index all these damn quotes and scan them every time there's a search performed. It takes up A LOT of bandwith to do that, one of the reasons we had to leave Dreamhost and pay more for this new host. This forum will eventually start running like crap again, and then we'll have no choice but to start deleting original content.

It would have been much more efficient to simply have given a credible cause to do so instead of stating that it was due to your personal annoyance. It certainly would have prevented frustration from multiple users, and would have possibly even lead to them agreeing with the reasoning.

The deletions are far more annoying and distracting. :/

Seems a frivolous way to go about editing people's posts, when nothing has been done wrong.

I stated that it WAS annoying, not that it was due to that. That fact that it's annoying just makes me more passionate about it.

Look, did I make my post when I was angry and irritated? Yes.
Did I use language that made it appear that I was going to implement my wrath upon you? Yes.
Did I -actually- want to do this? Yes (I was grumpy).
Did I -actually- do it anywhere outside this thread (which I did in this thread to make a point)? No.
If I was really abusing my power, would I have bothered to get feedback at all? Unlikely
Are my stated points valid? (More bandwith usage, unreadable for the blind) Yes.
Are the stated points against this valid? (continuity) No (imo).
Does my point still stand? Yes (imo).

Am I still grumpy? Hell yes!
Do I love you all regardless? Hell yes!

I kind of had that vibe from you Doug, because I frequently blow up in the same way myself but those who know me just know that I'm venting and my b--ching is usually done with a bit of a grin behind it.

I probably would have (sarcastically) given you crap about it anyway, but after everyone else started piling on, it just didn't seem sporting.

Well, I'm glad you posted this, because I had gone on a (short-lived, now-rescinded) forum-posting strike over the issue. So let me go over these points of yours:

I'm glad it was only on this thread, to make a point. Because the point that I got from it was "I am Doug! I can do what I what! See? It doesn't matter what you what. Despite your puny protestations, I have gone ahead and deleted parts of your posts. Today, this thread, tomorrow the world!!! And maybe next time, just adding or deleting a word here or there to radically change the meaning, without that nice red notification. Who knows? As the whim hits me! BWAHAHA!"

Getting feeback is only meaningful if you consider it and debate it, not if you just toss it in the circular file and continue on the course you had pre-determined.

Were your stated points valid? Quite possibly, but you only stated them well AFTER the fact and the feedback, as Cdls correctly points out.

Another point against it which may or may not have been made (and gosh, really no way to tell, if admins are going to randomly touch posts ;-) ) , and the one that was the most vsiceral to me, is, short of rules violations (CRB, Spam, etc), people's words shouldn't be tampered with. They should have the right to post things as they see fit. SHOULD people avoid lots of meaningless quoting? Sure. I don't think you will find many people disagreeing with you there. Should you, Doug, gently remind them, if they are doing to much of that? Absolutely. (And btw, the flipside of the disability argument applies here -- I personally know Cantr users who have a difficult time because of physical disabilities in trimming quotes, and I cut them slack when they PM me) But to just go ahead and change things? That rankles First Amendment Gejyspa!

So, glad to see you still love us.

Sorry, Doug. I've got this.. uhm... thing with not editing posts unless it's truly necessary because of broken rules, ya know. :P No matter how much they might annoy me. Doesn't mean I love you any less (or does it? :o). It's just a thing that could possibly make me grumpy (though I'm not! at least not right now), so I just stated my initial sentiment. ;)

Are there enough damned smilies in that post? Why the hell did I use so many smilies? I shall never know.

There are only three....I've been known to use a lot more in a shorter post. :D
